BRILLIANT START AT HAVRE Great Crowd Sees Inauguration of Maryland Fall Racing. Single Foot Scores Notable Success In 0,000 Eastern Shore Handicap, Winning By a Neck. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., Sept 24. Single Foot, which races for the Maryland turfman J. E. Griffith, won the 0,000 Eastern Shore Handicap at Havre de Grace this afternoon. He carried top weight, ridden by C. Fair-brother, came from behind in the stretch run to wear down the tiring Saratgo Maje to beat the latter out by a neck in tho final strides. Fourteen of the twenty carded went to the post and Single Foot had the call with the bettors at all stages. In the early running Saratoga Maje assumed command and led until well inside the final eighth when she began to weaken. At the end Single Foot responded with splendid courage. Chink was third, beaten another neck for second place, and a length in front of Gymkhana. The stake was worth ,650 to the winner. It was a great crowd that turned out at Havre de Grace this afternoon to usher in the fall season of racing in Maryland and tho Harford Racing and Agricultural Association never enjoyed a more brilliant opening. Society turned out in force and the club house boxes were filled by some of the first families in this section of the country. Speculations was keen and the sport of a high order. Under the new system of starting James Milton had wonderful success. The starts were prompt and good, tho elimination of the assistant starters whips apparently was no drawback to Miltons usual good work at the barrier. Time Exposure, the speedy son of High Time, made his opponents look cheap in the third race. Callahan sent him to the front soon after the start and he held command throughout winning with something in reserve by a length from Noel. The latter beat Flying Cloud by a head for second place. Will Land was the disappointment of the race. He found strong support and when he raced with the leaders the first quarter it looked as if ho would be a dangerous factor. Rounding the far turn he quit and was beaten off at the end. Lord Baltimore II. was eased up all through the homestretch or he would have been closer up. RUSTIC EASILY BEST. Rustic proved easily best of the horses that went to the post in the fifth race for which he was a well bocked favorite. He was ridden by J. Maiben, was forced to overcome a lot of interference and finishing like a real race horse got up in the stretch run to win by half a length. Brice was the one to set the pace. He started free and clear and on the backstretch assumed an easy lead of a couple of lengths. He held command until rounding the far turn whore Sunayr moved up with a rush and passed him. The first race brought out a field of a dozen maiden two-year-olds and when the final test came all of the early leaders tired, leaving the Kilmer filly, Sun Polly, to get up and win going away by half a length. Slow and Easy beat Midinette for the place. Normal was a heavily backed favorite in the second race, at a mile and a sixteenth. He was ridden by J. Maiben, raced in the middle cf the bunch to the first half mile, moved up stoutly on the inside rounding the far turn and at the end drew away into a! long lead. South Breeze landed second money after being under pressure from the start and he was driving to the limit at the end to hold Widgeon safe.
