Commander J. K. L. Ross got back into action this afternoon as a winner of the features at Woodbine. He turned the trick upon the first three days of the meeting1, lost by a nose on the fourth afternoon and won it today through the speed of Vrana. The Marathon filly easily beat the best of her ago that could be brought against her in the twenty-fifth running of the Stanley Produce Stakes, ,000 added contest at a mile and a quarter for Canadian-bred three-year-olds. Walls had the mount Itjas a repetition of her other race at the rMjhe went to the front at the rise BF r an1 stayed there, cantering tjv sho won by three lengths, haBn in front at one time. ThorndykiHne others. Smooth Ice was third. VrMKrned ?3,455 by her performance. Smooth Ice followed Vrana closest early but quit badly in the final eighth, enabling Thorndyke to take second place easily. The winner was the second of the afternoon to be ridden by Pete Walls. Weather conditions worked a hardship upon the Ontario Jockey Club in the presentation of its fifth program. Rain which began falling lightly about noon on Sunday contin ued practically without interruption until the middle of the forenoon today. Although the rainfall never attained heavy proportions it made the track sloppy, caused several scratches and reduced the crowd to the smallest of the meeting. There were about 5,000 persons present. The best field of the afternoon was assembled for the Epsom Plate. It was at a milo and seventy yards and filled fifth posi- ; tion on the card. Joy Smoke won it in the colors of J. E. Madden. Lang piloted the son of Sir Martin Sweet Brier. Long Point finished second, two lengths behind. Bontaud was third. Bonnie Omar beat the other starter, Hermidale. Long Point began well from the inside position and went to the front immediately with Coltiletti sitting still upon him. Joy Smoke, under a choking pull followed a length off the pacemaker and was on the outside of him. Nearing the stretch Lang set the Sir Martin gelding down. He responded quickly, came around Long Point and began to draw away in the final eighth with Lang merely shaking the whip in front of him at the end to keep him at his business. W. M. Cains White Wings began quickly under the alert Fisher in the opener, splashed mud at her competitors for three-quarters and won by a length and a half. Duckling beat the others in a field of ten. Canister took third money. White Wings raced Marie Dattner into defeat early but had to be ridden out to outlast Duckling. F. M. Algers Herriard was an easy winner of the Ringwood Steeplechase, a claiming contest at two miles. A. Williams had the leg on the winner. It was a pretty race, although the field numbered only five and Cavendish came to grief at the twelfth jump. Cavendish and Irish Dream made pace almost as a team for the first turn of the field. Cavendish raced inside of his opponent saving ground all the way. At the ninth jump Cavendish bobbled and fell back from Irish Dream for the first time. Simultaneously Herriard moved, up from third position on the outside of Irish Dream and the pair of them raced head and head for the next half mile. Cavendish had fallen back beaten and lost his rider in landing at the twelfth fence. Herriard drew away from Irish Dream handily in the final drive. Irish Dream held on for second money far in advance of Flying Frog, which easily beat the other starter. Butcher Boy. -
