Oh Susanna Narrowly Averts Defeat Winning From Pyroot By Inches. LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 4. Desha Breckinridges good colt, Kentucky Cardinal, entered into the hall of fame this afternoon when he -won the Queen City Handicap, carrying a net total prize of 6,925 to the winner and defeated some of the best youngsters that could be mustered in the west to race the mile distance. His success was of the easiest kind and the time, 1:38, enhances the laurels of the gallant son of North Star III. Lucrative. Following him in second place, after having displayed a high order of speed came Captain Hal with Almadel in third place. Mark Master finished in fourth place. Captain Hals extreme early speed enabled him to go into a long lead at once but Kentucky Cardinal was always in close pursuit of him and when the leader began tiring he went to him with a rush and after a short but decisive duel he drew away to win with much in reserve. Captain Hal was a good ways in advance of Almadel. The latter showed a fine performance also. He was caught in a jam before rounding the first turn which caused him to be among the rear guard in the first quarter but he worked his way forwardly in steady and game style and was going fast at the end. Mark Master also raced well for the entire way. The race had its start and finish a sixteenth from the original finish. This was done with a view to eliminating any crowding and to give all free opportunity to race their best In their anxiety to secure vantage positions going to the first turn some of the jockeys did cause some intereference, the rear brigade suffering mostly as a result CLOSE FINISHES THE RULE. Todays splendid program featured by the rich Queen City Handicap, which annually serves as a barometer for the most likely one to be honored with favoritism in the kentucky Derby brought out a big crowd to witness the sport at Latonia. Ideal weather contributed extensively to the enjoyment of the throng. Close finishes were the order in many instances and their closeness at times caused a doubt as to the winner until the judges placing had been announced. The sixth race in which J. N. Camdens Oh Susanna was one of the shortest priced starters during the present meeting and in which she was regarded as almost a certain victress, almost caused her great number of backers heart affliction when she barely staggered home to win by a matter of inches from Pyroot. She had been leading in easy stylo during the first half mile but suddenly began tiring and McDermott was put to a hard task to keep her going just long enough to last Pyroot had closed an immense gap and would have won in another stride. Tesuque, an outsider, finished in third place. The Audley Farm Stables Pegasus was another to have a close call from defeat He was the favorite in the fourth race and suffered some after the start causing him to be far out of it but he came like a shot in the stretch and got up to down Right on Time with Quince Garden in third place. Quince Garden was a keen sufferer from interference when Pegasus crowded over during his strong stretch run. Pegasus is noted for his swerving tendencies from an outer position and likes to run best next the inner rail. ANOTHER FOR SAKAH. Sakah added another victory to his score but he also found new ownership after the race, Mose Goldblatt claiming him at a cost of ,500. Pretty Politician also showed a fine performance to race in close pursuit of the winner and finish in second place with Kufiya up in time for third place. The sport began with a victory for Gorget which had to be ridden to the limit to get home a slight margin before Dusty Mary with Uproar pressing the pair sharply. The winner led from the start but it took Pools best efforts to keep him in advance of Dusty Mary. The latter made her ifnal bid at the eighth post and failing to overhaul the leader began tiring and just lasted long enough to outstay Uproar. The latter was going fastest of all at the finish. The second race was marked by the frac-tiousness of Statler at the post. Ho threw Continued on sixteenth page. ENTERS HALL OF FAME Continued from first page. Lilley, his rider, and proceeded to run away for three-quarters. He Avas remounted and coon thereafter again threw the rider, this time with force and landing Lilley astride the fence. Lilley got back on him and when the start came he was in close pursuit of Cherrycote, the leader, for half a mile before he began fading out of the running. cote held the lead to the last eighth where Nogales passed him out to win well under restraint. Bean King finished in third place. Watchful was expected to figure largely in the result but Howard took him back repeatedly and generally rode a faulty race. Ramkin repeated his sensational victory of a few days ago when he came far back to land the third race from Opulent and Randel. There were eleven starters in the race and Ramkin in the early stages was a distant last but he came like a rocket through the stretch and circling the others got up in the last twenty yards to down the leader. Opulent held on just long enough to take second place from the fast finishing Randel. The latter caused a bad jam soon after the start when his rider took him across the others sharply. Opulent was claimed by M. Shapoff for ,900.
