FRENCH STAR EAST BOUND Epinard Shipped to Laurel Track Altawoods Performance in the Third International. LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 15. Trainer Eugene Leigh shipped Epinard this morning to Laurel and with the French champion went the . horses brought here by trainer Louis Feustel, including Ladkin. That colt seemingly was .in . as good condition as when he came here. Jockey Haynes, under contract I to Pierre Wertheimer and who rode Epinard j in the three International Specials, took his : departure also. Epinard will, according to present plans, be started in Maryland in the Laurel Stakes and Washington Handicap. The prospects for a return meeting of the International Special starters at Churchill Downs are not favorable. According to reports, some of the owners and trainers are desirous of meeting Epinard again at the mile distance. "Gene" Leigh is said to be unfavorable to propositions that do not have the mile and a quarter route as an objective. The Wise Counsellor connections favor a mile and trainer Hirsch, who has Sarazen in charge, is also favoring the mile distance. "Sarazen has beaten Epinard at a mile and a quarter," retorts Hirsch, "so why race again at a distance that Sarazen has proven superior. I want to set at rest any idea that Sarazen cant beat Epinard at a shorter distance," concludes the trainer. There are many here who opine that but for the conditions that barred a gelding from engaging in the first two specials, Sarazen would have triumphed in all of them. While the glamor of the specials centers about Epinard, Ladkin, Wise Counsellor and Sarazen, credit is not accorded to Altawood, which, under ordinary circumstances, would have been the secondary hero of the final International Special. His performance was on a par with the winner and but for an unfortunate swerve when going at his top speed in the stretch, he would have been an easy second. He was, at one period of the race, nearly twenty lengths away from the leaders and his sensational last half mile dash held the close observers spell bound. He circled the others in the field with a wide sweep at the stretch turn and it lost him much ground, but he was going like a shot when McDermott lost momentary control of him or he swerved of his own accord into Mad Play. The carom checked his speed for just long enough to cost him second "place, for he could not regain the full stride he was racing in before the bumping. Altawoods engagements as a three-year-old were limited and it caused him to refrain meeting the elect But in those races in which he met the best horses he showed that he "belonged" with the best He is destined to start in both tho Pimlico and Bowie Cups and he will be shipped soon to the Maryland track to receive his final preparations for his engagement there. The horses intended for a Maryland campaign by E. R. Bradley include Blue Warbler, Baffling, Breakfast Bell and Brown Sugar. They will be shipped next week from Latonia to Pimlico.
