CLOSE AND EXCITING 1 Finishes at Churchill Downs Delight Big Monday Crowd. Starbeck, Pegasus and Bradleys Toney Separated by Inches in Feature Race. LOUISVILLE. Ky., Oct. 27. Mondays racing produced some of the closest finishes, of the present meeting and it furnished highly exciting entertainment for the good attendance that was on hand to view the sport Most of the fields were well matched and they raced compactly for most of the way and came to the finish driving hard and at times in so close alignment that the winner Avas in doubt until the final placing. The Elks Handicap at seven-eighths milp featured and brought to the post seven starters. The finish here was of the thrilling variety, with Starbeck, Pegasus and Bradleys Toney separated by a matter of inches. The judges gave Starbeck the purse, with Pegasus in second place and Bradleys Toney third. There was some doubt as to the correctness of the decision, for Pegasus appeared to have crossed the finish in the van. The officials, however, are in the better position to judge. The winner raced in his best form and shared with Right On Time the role of pacemaker. He seemed done for in the last eighth when Pegasus and Bradleys Toney, both coming from far back, headed him. He held on gamely, however, and was given the verdict Another hair-line finish came in the third race, which brought a band of fourteen to the post to race at one mile. Miss Cerina was the victress here, just lasting to win by a nose from Sunayr, with Alleden a nose away and King Gorin II. also inches back of the trio. GRIFFINS FIXE RIDING. The diminutive Griffin, who is beginning to show real horsemanship, had the mounts on Miss Cerina and Starbeck and he handled his mounts in veteran like style, being particularly cool and confident in the pinch. The third race, in which ten good platers met at three-quarters, was another hard-fought contest, with the first three at the finish again noses apart and fighting it out in sensational style. The superior riding that Wallace gave Pure Dee accounted for this C. H. Trotter representative getting the purse from Max Brick, with Huon Pine third. Max Brick came with a tremendous rush after having been hopelessly out of it and he would have won in another stride. Magic Wand, which was highly regarded in the race, was claimed for ?3,100 by A. E. Barrett. The second race, in which maiden two-year-olds engaged, resulted in a victory for the first time starter Winter Street, in easy fashion from Great Rock, with Spandor, coupled with Planter as the Audley Farm Stable entry, in third place. The latter pair were outstanding favorites, but the winner did not lack supporters. His trainer tried to have him excused from starting during the morning hours, but as no reasonable excuse was offered for the withdrawal, the stewards denied their permission. phil mccann first. In the opening race Phil McCann, well backed, was the victor by a slight margin over Extra Edition, with Isaman in third place. Phil McCann began fast and, after shaking off Isaman, had enough in reserve to outstay the fast gaining Extra Edition. The latter was away slowly and raced far in back of the others for most of the way, but began coming with a rush after he reached the stretch. The colors of M. Shapoff were again in the limelight This time they were carried to victory by Maximaneh, which he claimed in her preceding start She beat home thirteen two-year-olds that started in the sixth race. Protectress finished second and Fanny De Coursy third. Maximaneh was lucky to avoid interference and she held on gamely. There were two claims in the race, M. P. Shapoff claiming High Water at a cost of ?3,100 and B. J. Branncn taking Star Sweeper at a cost of ,300. The closing race fell to Lily M., running for the first time in the colors of Mrs. R. Mc-Garvey, who claimed the filly in her last start Lily M. won from Colored Boy, with Seclusion heading the others in third place.
