STARBECK SURPRISES - Furnishes Upset in Winning the Pendennis Handicap. $ Beats Hopeless and Pegasus Over Mile Route After Some Previous Disappointing Races. LOUISVILLE. Ky., Nov. 3. John Lowes Starbeck, which has been performing inconsistently here in four starts, furnished an outstanding upset when he won the Pendennis Handicap over the mile route from Hopeless with Pegasus in third place. His showing in a preceding start was so poor that he had few supporters this afternoon, and they profited handsomely as a result of the victory. There were seven good ones to make the contest, with Hopeless and Graeme accorded extensive support and Pegasus also having a host of followers. Starbecks good showing today Avas aided by the light weight he carried. He began forwardly and attended the fast Just David closely until the latter gave way, where he moved into the lead, but had to be urged hard and forced to continue determinedly to stall off the game challenging Hopeless. The latter was lucky to slip through a small opening at the stretch turn, which gained considerable ground for him, but he was unequal to the task of wearing down the winner. Pegasus raced well and finished gamely. Graemes showing was a dull one, his rider seemingly being unable to get liim into full stride. With the exception of the feature race, the other six races were devoid of star racers, but the even calibre of the participants accounted for some excellent sport. In two instances, the iirst and sixth races, Annie Lyle and Dorothy Adams, the best of their respective fields, suffered defeat through poorly judged rides and faulty beginnings. CLIMAX LUCKY VICTORY. The opening race enabled Climax to score a lucky victory by a matter of inches from Our Option with Annie Lyle in third place. Bad post acting caused the latter to be away so poorly that she was almost left. She . closed an immense gap and was going well in the stretch when she suffered interference that forced her to go around the others. She came again stoutly but her diminutive rider was not equal to the occasion. Climax and Spanish Rose raced in advance of the others for three-quarters, Spanish Rose giving way then. Climax fought it out stubbornly and subjected Our Option to some interference near the end. Down Town, which in a preceding start, when ridden by Wallace, was beaten off, the jockey easing him up in the stretch, was made favorite in the second race with Theo Red also stoutly backed. Both were beaten handily by Singlehand, which raced in mort improved form under Lilleys energetic riding than he did with Garner up. Down Town displayed good speed and raced promptly into the lead with Singlehand following and Theo Red third. There Avas no change in the running until in the last eighth where Single-hand moved by Down Town to Avin handily. Down Town Avas easily second best and beat Theo Red by a good margin. T. C. McDoaycIIs Watchful AAas victor in the fourth race, and he showed improAement over a preceding start He was aAvay for-Avardly and hustlingly ridden, moAed into the lead at once and shoAAed the Aray for the entire distance. Isaman came Avith a great rush in the last eighth but missed getting up by a matter of half a length. LaPlanche de Briante finished in third place after having been prominent for most of the way. Snow Maiden AAas the favored one in the race, but she performed poorly. Watchful Avas claimed from the race by C. Harrigan at a cost of 51.C0O. RAPID DAY HOME FIRST. Rapid Day was backed with rare confidence in the third and Avisdom Avas correct here, for he raced as if much the best and won Avith ease from Cobweb, Dorius following in third place. Cobweb shoAved fine speed, but ho Avas leader on sufferance only, as Griffin had Rapid Day under hard restraint for half a mile and moAed by the leader Avith the utmost easein the stretch. Dorius raced far out of it for the first half mile but he came Avith a big rush near the end. In Dorothy Adams case she Avas idden by J. Heupel and that rider found himself unprepared at the start and in a bad jam during the first eighth, causing him to take his mount completely out of it and for a Avhile she raced in last place. She closed an immense gap during the last three eighths but missed by seA-eral inches of downing Cap-tiva. High Water, racing in suddenly improved form, finished in third place, slightly in adA-ance of the huddled group that followed. Dorothy Adams AAas claimed for ,-200 by A. E. Barrett. The fifteen starters in this race comprised the only big field that lined up to the barrier during the afternoon. There AAas a slight falling off in attend-: . ance, the clubhouse contingent being notice- . ably small in numbers. Weather conditions Avere again faAorable to the sport. The closing race enabled jockey S. ODon-nell to score his first Aictory in Kentucky AA-hen he piloted home Defiant a victor from PoIa-o, Avith Sporty McGee in third place. PoIa-o set out as if he Avould make a runaway race of it and he led Plus Ultra by a good margin. Plus Ultra quit fast after reaching the stretch and it appeared as if PolAo AAould go on to victory,, but Defiant ;came Avith a great rush in the last sixteenth and got up in the last few strides to Avin by a neck. Sporty McGee held the others safe for third place.
