j FIRST NIGHT OF SALE Seventy-Nine Head Go Under Hammer for Total of 43,400. Montfort Jones Pays Top Price of ,100 for Mare, Furbelow Summary of Selling. NEW YORK, N. T., Dec. 11. Just before the opening of the dispersal sale of E. F.. Simms Nalapa Farm thoroughbreds in Squadron A Armory, Wednesday night, there came news of the sudden death of August Belmont, chairman of the Jockey Club. This of necessity cast a gloom over the big assemblage of horsemen and breeders that had gathered, and it undoubtedly had its effect on the bidding. There were seventy-nine lots disposed of by the Fasig-Tipton Company, for a total of 4:1,400, an average of more than ,815, and that would seem a good average, but it was hardly up to expectations when the quality of the horses that went under the hammer is taken into consideration. Before the first offering was led into the sales ring, E. F. Simms announced from the auctioneers block that all of his horses offered were to be sold absolutely without reserve and that he would not buy any of them himself. This was an assurance that caused a ripple of applause from the big gathering about the ring and it was an announcement that naturally at once set prospective bidders at case. The sale consisted of brood mares and foals and, naturally, the bidding came from breeders, though there were many at the ringsid-; Who attended the vendue in the hope of picking up likely racing material, rather than breeding stock. The foals attracted some bidding from these but a yearling is naturally a more attractive proposition for the sportsman than a foal. HIDDEN STAR BRINGS ,500. The top price realized was ,100, paid by Montfort Jones, of the Audley Farm, for Furbelow, a daughter of Peter Pan Frillery. John E. Madden paid the second best price when he went to ,500 for the mare. Hidden Star, daughter of Burgomaster Black Venus, that had been bred to Negofol. Mr. Madden, who was a liberal buyer, also paid the top price for a foal when he took the brown or black filly by Prince Palatine Dismiss, by Ogden, for ,400, The Audley Farm went to ,000 for Crock o Gold, the daughter of Friar Rock Collar of Roses, which was bred to Negofol this year. Some of the other successful bidders during the night were, Samuel D. Riddle, C. IT. Ber-ryman, Joseph E. Widener, Willis Sliarpe Kilmer, J. W. McClelland. J. C. Milam, Frederick Johnson, S. K. Nichols, W. B. Miller, Swingalong Stable, J. B. Respess, Pete Coyne, Robert L. Gerry, Tom Young, Thomas Piatt, and J. W. Bean. The Armory was thronged long before sale time with a distinguished gathering of turfmen and Kentucky was particularly well represented. It reminded one of Saratoga in mid-August and while many were on hand, just from the inherent love of the thorough - Contimied on sixteenth page. Before the sale Mr. Tranter stated that a bond had been filed to cover the attachment for 5,600, which the Due Decazes had obtained from the Supreme Court Tuesday, against the Xalapa Farm horses. Due Decazes alleged that he sold a half interest in the stallion Negofol to Mr. Simms in 1920 for S00, 000 francs,, and claims that he has been trying to collect ever since the sale of the get of this sire at Saratoga last August. According to Francois Dupre, the dukes New York agent, no division was " made of the money received from the colt, because of the dispute as to terms. Hie attachment was served against the stallions Eternal, Leonardo II., Prince Pal and Theo Cook. Negofol, the cause of the action, was left on the farm. "With the filing of the bond to cover the amount of the suit and costs the possibility of hindrance to the sale was removed. During the day the armory was thronged with visitors, most of them were bidders during the sale and much interest was taken in the stock. The horses stood the tedious trip from the Kentucky farm well and most of them were in good sale condition. The stallions Eternal and Leonardo II. attracted .the most attention and each is a vertiable show animal. Prince Pal and Theo Cook also came in for admiration and Lucky Hour and The "Wanderer brought favorable comments from good judges. Among those present at the sale were: Mr. and Mrs. Payne "Whitney, Mrs. Harry F. Sinclair and Miss Farrell, Larry Water-bury, Joseph E. Widener. George D. Widener, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel D.
