PUBLISHER AN EASY WINNER • Defeats Knighthood and Coffield in Gilda Grey Handicap. • Jockey A. Mortenson Has Great Day in Saddle, Riding Three Winners, Publisher, Sonny Maid and Solimente. SAN DIEGO, Calif., April 3— The lightly •weighted Publisher won the Gilda Grey Handicap here today with ridiculous ease, finishing seven full lengths before ltowe and Ramseys Knighthood. This was the feature attraction on the Friday program, the remainder of the card being made up of claiming races. Publisher was the third winner for jockey Mortenson, he having previously ridden Solimente and Sunny Maid to victory. Publisher was away fast and, after following A. Lester closely for the first eighth, sprinted into a long lead and won easing up. Knighthood and Coffield, in the meantime, had run into a pocket and did not find rae-. ing room until the last quarter, where Knighthood made up much ground to finish second. Coffield also finished fast and was an easy third, three lengths before Good Times. The first race produced a thrilling finish when Napan, in fifth place at the turn into the home stretch, made a sensational rush in the last eighth to be winner by a nose from Yorkshire Relish. Jockey Klston, on the latter, was so busily engaged watching Settee that he did not notice Napan and the latter got his nose in front in the last sti ide. Napan was forced wide on the turn, but finished with fine courage under a good ride. Yorkshire Relish showed much speed throughout and fought it out with Settee all the way. The latter was next to the rail in the stretch and hung on resolutely to be third. MORTENSOX RIDES A WINNER. Sunny Maid, favorite in the first, made good easily, scoring a well-earned victory over Mi Amigo and Deep Blue, which finished second and third respectively. Sunny Maid began quickly but permitted the ethers to show the way to the stretch, where Morten-son brought her up with a rush and she easily drew away to win by a length. Mi Amigo showed speed after beginning from an outside position and outstayed Deep Blue in a long drive. Sannatuga was in tight quarters most of the way because of her penchant for bearing in. Shasta Sol ran a good race after being away slowly. Miss Oakland was on the outside mest of the way and Martinez did not persevere with her in the stretch racing. Norfield simply cantered to be home winner of the third, a three-quarter mile affair for plaers. He was also a top-heavy favorite, Acquitted being next in demand. The veteran E. Taplin, sent Norfield to the front at the rise of the barrier and, taking a three-length lead, he seadily increased it until at the finish there was five open lengths between Norfield and Acquitted. Franc Tireur made an attempt to race with Norfield in the early stages, but soon gave it up. Acquitted took up the pursuit, but he could never get close to the winner. Nas Ta Baga. after overcoming much early interference, finished third. She swerved badly however in the stretch. Nacomee ran an uneven race showing flashes of speed only to fall back again. SOLIMENTE WINS. Solimente and Lady Berrilldon fought it out stride for stride through the stretch-in the fourth race with the former getting the verdict by a head. Solimente was close to the rail all the way and courageously making up ground on the last turn, got through above the eighth post and catching Lady Berrilldon a sixteenth from home, just got up in the last stride. Lady Berrilldon raced Sing On into defeat in the first half and appeared the winner when opposite the paddock but could not stall off the winner. White Lights was running strongest of the others at the finish. Settee was claimed out of the third race by D. R Berman for 00. Immediately after the start of the sixth race, a mile contest for three-year-olds and over. Isosceles rushed into a long lead and, holding it easily, was under restraint the remainder of the journey. Black Wand raced in persistent pursuit of the winner and made a determined but futile effort to wear him down on the far turn but was not good enough. Royal Oaks was badly outrun in the early stages of the race, but saved ground on the last turn and finished with a rush. Poppina was devoid of early speed and raced wide when entering the home stretch. She tired badly after apparently having third place won and was headed by Royal Oak. Elizabeth K. quit badly after racing well up for a half mile.
