Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April 4, 1905 Racing at Washington, D. C, New Orleans, Memphis and San Francisco. With inconsistent running and foul riding, the talent at Benning are all at sea. The victory of Veiled Lady was a marked reversal, while in the Rcseben Santa Catalina race the foul work of Fulhr on Roseben was the talk of the horsemen. He continually fouled Baird in the run through the stretch. Although Baird made a complaint, the stewards did not allow it. It was a wretched decision on their part, for the wcrk of Fuller was plain to every one. President Matt J. Winn of the American Turf A=sociation said: "All this talk about tracks being built in Indiana by Mr. Corrigan and John Condon is rot, pure and simple. I understand from a reliable source that the Western Jockey Club people are eager to fill out their original dates as awarded by the Western Jockey Club before the American Turf Association was organized and I want to say that the men who own the American Turf Association tracks in Chicago are willing to accept these dates and there will be no clash among the owners about the Windy City. M llions cf dollars are invested in Washington Park, Hawthorne, Harlem and Worth tracks and it would be the height of idiocy for these moneyed interests to wage war on each other and close up the game entirely in that city. I have positive information that the Western Jockey Club people have no desire for and. fight in Chicago, but that all are eager fo i ne tracks to run. Of course, I have hearrrtujj talk about Harlem to open as soon as Worth begins, but should the Western Jockey Club people take this unwise step we would instantly transfer the Worth meeting to the Hawthorne track and then fight it out to a finish and let the best man win. Such a condition, however, as is well known, would result in the closing up of all the Chicago tracks. One of the grandest race tracks in this country, if not in the world, is Washington Park and I have every reason to believe that this course will open on June 24."
