j ! : | I I , BREEDERS BUY STAR HAWK ♦ Messrs. Hancock and Woodward Secure Son of Sunstar. • A. K. Macomoers Kentucky Derby Candidate of 1917 Will Remain at the Claiborne Stud in Kentucky. ♦ LKXPfQTQN. Ky.. April 3.— A. B. Hancock and William Woodward of New York have purchased imported Star Hawk from A. K. Macomber, and this splendid son of Sunstar and Sweet Finch, by Gold Finch, is to remain in Kentucky at the Claiborne Stud, near Paris. The lease on the stallion from Macomber to Hancock and Belair Stud, owned by Mr. Woodward, was to have expired this year and they concluded that they would want to keep him. hence the purchase. This announcement is all the more interesting since it follows the news by cable that A. K. Macombers Torch Bearer, by Star Hawk — Kittenish, won the Grand Prix of one hundred thousand francs at Nice, France, the distance being one and three-eighths miles and the weight 123 pounds. Torch Bearer earlier in March won another event at Nice. Star Hawk was a two-year-old winner in Kngland and Macomber bought him with the idea of winning the Kentucky Derby for which race, after being left at the post, he was beaten a short head by George Smith, with "Johnnie" Loftus in the saddle of the winner. Star Hawk won the Lawrence Realization, one mile and five-eighths ; the Louisville Cup, two miles, and was beaten a head by Pif Jr., for the Latonia Cup, to which he was conceding ten pounds. Startle, Lizette, The Falconer, Gunsight and Toyon were first of the get of Star Hawk in America. They came in 1919, which year he entered the stud in France. Torch Bearer is of his first crop in France. The yearlings by Star Hawk are among the very best at Kllerslie and Claiborne Studs. There is a very outstanding one. a bay colt, out of Breathing Spell dam of Busy Ameri-| can and another nearly as good, the dark bay filly from Patricia IV., by Ard Patrick.
