| ! I i I I GENE ELROD PASSES AWAY Manager of Pari-Mutuel Departments on Kentucky Tracks Dies Suddenly in Cincinnati. CINCINNATI. Ohio. April 3.— Offcials of ■the Kentucky Jockey Club and horsemen generally were shocked to learn of the sudden death in Cincinnati at midnight Thursday of Gene Klrod, manager of the pari-mutuel departments on the Kentucky tracks. Mr. Klrod was identified with the turf in Kentucky for forty years and was popular with all classes. He was known to horsemen and turf patrons all over the country. Several years ago he was forced to curtail his activities owing to stomach trouble, but much to the astonishment of all he recovered from the ailment and resumed his duties as of yore, and his friends believed he was good for many years more of useful service. A native of Louisville, he was early iden-I tified with Macauleys Theater, in that city. but in 1884 left the theatrical business to become associated with the old Louisville I Jockey Club as manager of the batting ring. Ipon the introduction of the pari-mutuel system of wagering he was placed in charge of that department and held the position up to the time of his death. He had also been employed in a similar capacity at Juarez, Windsor and other tracks.
