FAVORITES IN LIMELIGHT * Jockey Elston and Picnic Prove Winning Combination. Lake Chapala, at Long Odds Carries Ranrho Wiklnp Stable Colors to Victory in Rare — Sunny Maid Easy Winner. ♦ ■ ■ SAN DIEGO. Calif.. April 9 —One of the best fields of the afternoon paraded to the post at Tijuana in the fifth race, a dash of three-quarters. F. C. Mannets Picnic, under a good ride by II. Elston. never left the result in doubt, going to the front at the rise of the barrier and holding sway to the finish. Idle Thoughts ran in much improved fashion and was Picnics closest follower throughout. Star of Eve, coupled in the mutuels with Idle Thoughts as the H. Barnett entry, was expected to cut a big figure in the final result, but it was Idle Thoughts that was best of the pair and took second place. Star of Eve was a forward contender in the early stages but gradually tired and fell steadily to the rear after the half mile pest had been passed. Seths Memory was a fast-finishing third. Mrs. B. C. Seburns Sunny Maid, odds-on favorite in the first race, got up in the final strides to pet the decision over the Nevada Stock Farms Green Wocd5. Sunny Maid began fast but was taken back for a quarter and came around the leaders when straightened out in the stretch and got up after a hard drive to win by a head. Green Woods raced Deep Blue, the early pacemaker, into defeat and held on resolutely when challenged by the winner. Miss Oakland moved up fast in the stretch and ran a good race. Sannatuga was a forward contender all the way and tired slightly in the final drive. Friend Joe had a rough race. Mi Amigo was eliminated in the first sixteenth, due to a jam. Letter Six fell but G. Toung, his rider, escaped injury. A long shot was the winner of the second. Lake Chapala. racing for the Rancho Wikiup Stable, scoring a well-earned victory over Shasta Rapids. The latter appeared the winner on the stretch turn, but gave way right at the finish. Iake Chapala began slowly on the outside and worked her way forward gradually and. securing a position on the inside rail rounding the far turn, closed up rapidly in the stretch to win going away. Shasta Rapids easily outran Jenks and seemed to have speed in reserve, but unexpectedly tired in the final sixteenth. Jenks followed the pacemaker closely and then held on well to take third easily, outstaying the others. Donita saved ground throughout by staying close to the inner rail. Lot of Style made up much ground from a slow beginning. Lady Lillian fell a victim to the superior speed of Dynamic, one of the outsiders in the third, a mile and an eighth race for platers. Lady Lillian was the preferred one and flattered her backers by taking command at the head of the stretch. Dynamic gained steadily, however, and after a brief drive with Lady Lillian through the stretch, drew out to win with speed in reserve. Iady Lillian had no excuse. She was well placed in the early running, saved ground and looked like a winner an eighth out. Apricot was poorly ridden, losing ground throughout. Sea Green loomed up menacingly on the last turn and then tired. Dell Evans sprinted into a good lead in the first eighth in the fourth and held it to the finish, making every post a winning one. He crowded over the first few strides and knocked Runaway and Joe V. out of contention. The latter recovered quickly and, making up the lost ground, raced into third place. My Friend Pat could not keep up with the winner in the early stages, but gained on him in the final eighth. Serena began fast but was allowed to drop back and could never make up the lost ground. Runaway, after being knocked back at the start, ran a dull race and had little speed.
