GEM AND STARMATIA DUEL ♦ Furnish Best Finish of Thursdays Huntington Card. — » Little Black Sheep Beats Cuba Encanto — Brass Band Makes Good — My Biddy Fails. ♦ HUNTINGTON, W. Va., April 9.— Racing like a team, Gem and Starmatia provided the best finish of the afternoon in the sixth race which attracted the best field at the Tri-Stale Fair Grounds today. Gem was awarded the verdict by a short head after the pair had fought it out all the last half mile. Red Legs, the favorite, dropped out of contention rounding the far turn but came aeiin in the strecth to earn the short end of tn. purse. Favorable conditions prevailed early in the day but rain threatened near the close of the proceedings. The track was in fine condition and the attendance was of goodly proportions. Cuba Eneanto set out to make a runaway of the fourth race, closely followed by Little Black Sheep. Midway the stretch the latter challenged and eventually drew away to a handy victory. Cuba Kncanto was tiring near the end and driving hard to save second from the fast finishing Betty Mae, which began slowly. Black Top was severely kicked in the mouth while at the post for the last race yesterday and several of his teeth injured. Whirlwind was excused from the second I race today, having cooled out sore after his race yesterday. Lucky Lou developed a fever this morning and was excused from the first race. After following the pace of Josephine C until midway the stretch, Corenne forged to i the front and scored his initial success of this meeting. Rob accounted for the second race. He 1 went around the leaders with a rush entering the stretch and drew away to an easy victory in the last eighth. Dahinda, coming from lehind, outlasted Lucky Dollar for second place. Zainer, the favorite, quit in the stretch. An upset came with the running of the third race when Louise Wagner, an outsider, romped home an easy winner after showing the way throughout the stretch run. My Biddy, a supposed "good thing," raced prom-, inently most of the way. but at the end was 1 | hard pressed to save second place from Havana Electric. Peter Piper was sore going ! to the post and tired during the stretch. Brass Band was fortunate in securing clear sailing next the inner rail while rounding the last bend in the fifth event and drew away to a handy victory in the stretch. Les-i lie came from the rear in the run home and ! got second place from the fast-closing Crest-j wood Boy. Taking command after going the first Quarter1, Armistice was hard pressed to beat : Prince Direct by a narrow margin, in the . concluding event. Prince Direct finished | courageously but in close quarters near the ; inner rail. Two claims were deposited for Brass Band and in the draw W. .1. Potter outluckcd l| K E. Major. The price was 00. C.
