I i 1 1 ! . l| FAST TRAINING GALLOPS ♦ Drowsy Waters Displays Good Speed in Workout. ♦ Quatrain Attracts Attention at the Downs — Hamadan Shows Constant Improvement. 1 LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 9.— Dan Lehans maiden colt. Drowsy Waters, furnished the outstanding Derby workout at Churchill Downs this morning. The handsome son of Cataract and Bronzewing, with jockey Claver up, gave an exhibition of speed when he raced five-eighths in 1:01%, reeling off the eighth in :12, the quarter in :23%, three-eighths in :36 and the half in :48%. It was the fastest five-eighths witnessed since spring training commenced. Owner-trainer Lehan had instructed Claver to allow the colt to step along at a good clip and the rider was forced to apply the whip a number of times when Drowsy Waters showed an inclination to take matters easy. It was a most useful work and showed the Lehan colt to be possessed of good speed. He will be sent out for a speedy gallop at one mile Friday or Saturday. Local horsemen obtained their first glimpse of Frederick Johnsons Derby favorite Quatrain in action when trainer Tom Harmon sent the splendid son of Omar Khayyam and Bonnie Mary three-quarters as a prep for an ambitious move Friday morning. Quatrain had jockey E. Legere up and had as pacemaker a stablemate. the three-year-old Princess Adele. . Jockey J. Sigholz was aboard the latter. The pair began close together at the three-quarters post and Quatrain lost no time in going to the front and led the filly to the end. covering the three-quarters in 1 :20, the first quarter was reeled off in :26%, while the half was traversed in :52%. Great interest was manifested in Quatrains appearance on the course, and his work was closely scrutinized. He runs with a long stride and with head well erect. The colt cooled out nicely and was returned to his stall without incident. J. E. Wideners Derby candidate Hamadan is displaying steady improvement in his training under the patient care of G. H. Keene, who believes the colt will be fit and ready for the big race. Accompanied by Altawood, the Widener candidate for all of the valuable long distance stakes of the year. Hamadan was galloped three-quarters, going the distance without much effort in 1 ills. The pair covered the quarter in :25% and the half in :51%. Boon Companion, which, together with the other horses that Al Woodman is training for S. A. Cowan of Cleveland, has been moved from Douglas Park to the Downs, was given his first taste of work since his arrival from Miami, when he was galloped a half mile in :53%. The colts fine appearance was most favorably commented upon. Jake Lowenstein had his trio of Derby nominees out for short gallops, the three being worked separately. Rag Time made a good impression by reeling off a half mile in :49. Louis Rubenstein went a similar distance in :50 an dTairl was caught the half mile in :51. John Middleton sent G. C.
