COLUMBUS MEETING BEGINS — • Big Crowd at Beulah Park Despite Threatening Weather. ♦ Fegasns Scores Sparkling Success in Inaugural Handicap, Outstanding Attraction of Opening Program. COLUMBUS. Ohio, April 18.— The beautiful and popular Beulah Park race course threw open its gates this afternoon for the spring meeting of the Capital City Racing Association and though lowering clouds threatened a downpour at any minute, there was a big crowd present to welcome the return of the thoroughbred to these parts. For the opening attraction the Inaugural Handicap at one mile and seventy yards was provided and the winner came from the Hialeah Stable when Pegasus beat G. C. Talbutts Pat Casey, while E. Houghton s Pirate Gold finished third. Showing the most early speed. Pirate Gold set the pace, but gave way readily when challenged by Pat Casey. The latter then showed the way to the last eighth, where Pegasus caught and passed him in the last sixteenth to win by a half length. Pat Casey was easily second best. Pirate Gold was doing his best to hold Scissors safe. B. R. Walsh furnished the winner of the first race of the meeting when Northern Miss was home in advance of Mulligan and Freda D. The winner took the lead after rounding the stretch turn and held the others safe, while the favorite, Bathilde Seth, was always outpaced. A close finish marked the running of the second race, Bessie Hope driving hard to outlast Private Peat after having set the pace throughout. The latter was wearing the winner down and would have won in another stride or two. The Jones Stock Farm, which raced with marked success at Huntington, accounted for the third race. Idle Seth carrying its colors to victory. The Abbot was the early pacemaker on sufferance, but Idle Seth easily assumed command entering the back stretch and drew clear at the end. The Abbot tired in the last eighth and Golden Locks beat him for second place. Racing close up all the way Lucky Run gained fast in the stretch and, catching the tiring pacemaker. Old Paige, wrested the lead from him and had a margin of a length as they passed the judges. Step by Step closed a big gap to earn third place in the last stride.
