May 12— Rock Man the Trap Rock colt that scored four straight victories for the Sagamore Stable at the Maryland tracks this spring, met his first defeat when he was beaten by both Silver Finn and Skipalong in the Spring Juvenile Stakes at Pimlico this afternoon. Rock Man met and beat these same horses in some of his previous starts and the public plunged on him, the colt going to the post a 1 to 2 favorite. Rock Man began in front, but before they had gone an eighth, both Skipalong and Golden Haze passed him. Johnson was hustling and driving in an attempt to get i:p. but Rock Man for some reason or other was lacking in speed today. He was out in the middle of the track, where the footing was best and in the run through the home stretch swerved across to the inside and finished next to the rail. The winner of the stake was Silver Finn, a rather undersized colt by The Finn— Crankie. Barnes rode him and he used good judgment in not rushing him off his feet in the first quarter. Silver Finn was a follower to the top of the home stretch and when called on moved up stoutly to pass the tiring pacemakers in the final eighth and won going away by a couple of lengths. Skipalong was second a head in front of Rock Man and then came Welshot and Golden Haze, the latter tiring badly, under punishment. The four and a half furlongs were run in :54% : the stake has an added value of 15.000 and was worth ,820 net to the winner. James Howe gave the H. P. Whitney three-year-old Chicle colt Reminder, a public trial for his Derby engagement on Saturday when I he sent him to the post in the Wicomico Handicap this afternocn. Reminder performed creditably. Ridden by Ivan Farke he made all of the pice and beat Reparation l«y three parts of a length in handy fashion. Parke rated Reminder under restraint after taking the lead in the run to the turn and when Reparation made his bid at the top of the home stretch Reminder held him safe. It was a two-horse race all the way, the other pair, Rock Pocket and Prince Hamlet, j finishing s ven lengths back of the leaders. I Reminders race was satisfactory to Mr. Hi we and he announced that the colt would bo included in the shipment to Churchill Downs, which will leave here tomorrow. Chantey and Backbone will also be sent to Kentucky and it is possible that all three will be sent to the post in the Derby. There was a lot of contention in the Mount Washington Steeplechase. In the early stages Chuckle. Frank Furst and Roi Craig raced in a compact bunch, but after going one turn of the field Ri i Craig dropped out of it and Chuckle began to tire. Hayncs, in the mcan- Uuntinued on sixteenth pace. ROCK MANS FIRST DEFEAT Confninrtfl from ftrst pace- time, was ratrnjj the favorite Perkiomen in the middle of the bunch. Going to the ninth jump. Harries began sending: Perkiomen along; and in the nest eighth he moved up stoutly and joined the issue with Frank Furst. The latter was jumping well, and, try as Ilaynes would, Perkiomen was unable to shake off Frank Furst, which hung on Ifke a leach. They took the last jump on almost equal terms, and fighting it out to the end. Perkiomen managed to win by a neck. Twenty lengths back came Chuckle, a head. in front of Treviscot Griff wood lost hi* rider at the eighth fence and Roi Craig was pulled up after taking the twelfth jump. The WL J- Salmon Stable appears to be ■stronger than usual in two-year-olds this spring. Another youngster from the barn graduated from the maiden ranks this afternoon when Display beat a band of youngsters in the opening dash fox which he was a ■well backed favorite. Display was ridden "by K. Barnes, and after beginning rather slowly, worked his way up on the outside to catch the pacemaker Foretell, just after passing the half-mile post. This pair raced like a team until the stretch. The lapt sixteenth Foretell tired and Display drew away without effort to -win by «. length and a half. Grand Bey was third, two lengths back of Foretell and a length in frunt of the grey filly Quaker I ..ass. Another odds-un favorite went down to defeat when Primrose failed to make good in the sixth race, for which she was a heavily backed favorite. She was beaten by a length by Florence Nightingale. The latter, starting first, was rushed into a long lead rounding Uie far turn, but was tiring at the end. Barnes rode a very confident race on Primrose and trailed along in third position until straightened out in the home stretch. Primrose was gaining at the end and she might have won had Barnes got busy sooner. Primrose is a bit overrated.
