CAPTAIN HALS FAST TIME Works Derby Distance in 2:05Vo — Flying Ebony Arrives — Latest Derby Gossip. LOUISVILLE, Ky.. May 12.— There was a ripple of excitement this morning when Captain Hal was given his Kentucky Derby trial and ran the mile and a quarter in 2 :05%, by far the most pretentious trial of any of the prospective starters so far shown. The track was not at Its best, but its footing was firm and springy in places. The trial by fractions follows : Quarter, :23% ; half mile. :47% ; three-quarters, 1:13%; mile, 1:39%; mile and a quarter, ,2:05%. Boon Companion, also an expected Derby starter, worked a mile between the racing in 1:41%. "Bud" Fisher and trainer Alex Gordon are due to arrive from New York Wednesday. Jockey Laverne Fator has been engaged to I ride Swope, which gives color to the story that Sam C. Hildreth will refrain from sending Silver Fox to start in the Derby. Flying Ebony and Chief Uncas, owned respectively by Gifford A. Cochran and Augustus Busch, were arrivals this afternoon from the East. Flying Ebony came in charge of William Duke and Chief Uncas in I charge of G. Sanderson. George Odom is the latest to signify his intention of bringing a Derby representative to start Saturday. He is bringing Voltaic owned by Robert L. Gerry. He is expected here Wednesday. Single Foot and Swope were given light exercises this morning and will receive their final test for the Derby Thursday. Both ap-1 pear in good condition. Elsass has been shelved as a Derby pros-! pect and will not be among the starters. He received some minor bruises in his start Monday. Broadway Jones and Bill Strap, a pair of the Idle Hour Farm representatives, had I their Derby trial between races. They worked a mile and a quarter, Broadway Jones going the distance in 2 10% and Bill Strap finishing : a second slower, but both well under re- strain*. Son of John was worked three-quarters after the last race in 1:18%.
