April 27.— Derby candidates at the Downs were given their first real taste of preparation for the big race when several were asked to go the full route of a mile and one quarter this morning. The Parkview Stables pair. Rhinock and Royal Omar, were brought out on the track with Raymond Ilayden on the former and Roy Yates on the latter. Fred flood and trainer Covington closely observed the trial and were perfectly satisfied with the moves of both colts. They raced U ■ team for the first mile after which Royal Omar was taken up and Rhinock finished the mile and a quarter, but h« wai eased up all the last eighth. Rhinock was inclined to loaf as usual and he slowed up some In the middle quarter, but came on strong again when roused by Hay-den, who booted him a couple times after passing the half mile post. His effort was a good one and like Rhinock he carried his Derby weight. The track was fast but a strong wind was blowing from the south hitting the horses and riders in the back going down the back stretch and abreast of them through the stretch. He is well seasoned due to his racing at Tijuana and docs not nerd as much work as the horses that wintered here. Rig Hill Knapp sent the Pa Brae Stables Derby colts three-quarters this morning with Kddie Haywurd in the saddle. Sandy Man did his work in 1:1S% and American Son in 1:1S%. Bolton and Smiling Cus, from the . K. Durr.ell stable, covered a half mile in :51% and went on out the six furlongs in 1:1*%. lew Bloom sent Botanic three-eighths in :.17 after making the first quarter in :24%. Other horses to work were Moonraker. three quartan la 1:11; Kentucky Cardinal, half in :49. three-quarters in 1:10% and mile in l:UVk. Flagstaff and Serenader ran three-quarters together in the fractional time of :24%. :.".1%. 1:17%. Apprentice rider Sammy Steele, who suffered a broken right wrist at Miami last winter, is back at work at the Croissant stable after a visit to his home at Ainsworth. Ne*b. He saw the running of the Coffroth Handicap during his enforced idleness. His apprentice allowance does not expire before June 10 and his services will be much in demand by owners and trainers during the Churchill Downs meeting. Col. M. J. Winn is in Chicago on a business trip, but is expected back at his desk by the end of the week. Track superintendent Tom Young is in the "Windy City working hard on the new track tit Lincoln Fields, which is just outside the city of Chicago. Owners, trainers and jockeys are motoring back and forth between their stables at the local tracks and Ix-xington almost daily to get a glimpse of racing. Many have not seen a race for several montlis and seem to get a big kick out of witnessing the contests staged at Rexington. — ♦
