EDISTOS FAST RACE ♦ Shows Great Speed in Capturing Pimlico Spring Handicap. * Gun Boat Takes Elk Ridge Club Steeplechase — Potomac Purse to Murzim. • PIMLICO, Md., May 6— The Seagram Stables Fdisto came hack with a splendid performance at Pimlico this afternoon when he won the Pimlico Spring Handicap, a ,500 added stake at a mile and a sixteenth. Ridden by Krickson, Kdisto made a runaway of the race and a show of his company, which included among others Single Foot, Joy-Smoke, King Solomons Seal and General Thatcher. When the start came, Fdisto, beginning with the tail enders, went to the front with a rush and. entering the back stretch, was out in front fairly flying with a lead of a length and a half. He was setting a dazzling pace and. going the half in :17%, increased his advantage to three lengths. He still kept going away and when they passed the three-quarters post, he had four lengths advantage. The three-quarters in I :12% was good time for sprinters, but Fdisto had no thought of slowing up. He ran the mile in 1 :38, was a half dozen lengths in front and at the finish he still held this long margin. The mile and a sixteenth was run in 1 :45 — record time for this stake. Joy Smoke was the runner-up all the way. while Single Foot dropped into third place after they had gone three-eighths and remained there. The imported Mothers Son. a heavily backed second choice, showed a poor performance, winding up last of his field. Great things were expected of this fellow, but he proved a rank disappointment. ABABA* II. POOIt JUMPER, Gun Boat made his opponents look bad in the Klk Ridge Club Steeplechase. Carrying top weight and ridden by B. Haynes, he out-raced the others from the start, and was under restraint most of the way. At the ninth jump he made a bad landing, but recovered quickly and in the last quarter drew away. At the finish he led Casette by five lengths. The latter beat Ararat II. twelve lengths for second place. Ararat II. was the medium of a heavy play. He is a fast horse on the flat, but none too good a jumper. He made poor jumps at several of the obstacles and in the last quarter tired badly. Xorthland raced like a good colt in the second race. Ridden by Maiben, and beginning from the outside, he raced Dumpy into submission on the stretch turn, stalled off other challengers, and won going away at the end by a couple of lengths. Dumpy tired badly at the end and had to be hard ridden to beat Bong Joe half a length for second place. Faithful Friend showed a flash of speed rounding the far turn, but was eased up in the stretch. Xorthland was the shortest priced winner of the meeting. He went to the post a 1 to 2 favorite. A. P. CABALS FAILS. Two-year-olds were asked to race five-eighths for the first time this year on the Maryland circuit in the Potomac Purse. A field of six faced the starter, with A. P. Canale favorite and well supported. The winner turned up in Murzim. a slashing looking chestnut by Xorth Star III., from the stable of Walter J. Salmon. Murzim. off in front, was never headed. In the early stages he drew away and then Maiben took him under slight restraint. But-well made a desperate effort with Handclasp at the head of the stretch, where A. P. Canale began dropping back. In the last sixteenth Murzim again drew away and at the end had a two lengths lead. Handclasp was second, the same distance in front of Tamiami Trail. The winner ran the first half mile in :47%. and finished out the five-eighths in 1 :01A. Hamadan made all of his own pace in the fifth race and had a margin of two lengths and a half over Sir Beonid at the finish. When the start came the winner went across to the inside, causing a jam in which Adria went to her knees. Sir Ionid •va.s also crowded back. Redstone was the or e to furnish the opposition on the run down the back stretch and when he retired Sir Beonid moved up with a bold challenge. He was on almost even terms with the hrders at the eighth post where he looked a certain winner, hut in the last sixteenth he tired and Hamadan again drew away uneer a drive. Feysun was a distant third, beaten off eight lengths for second place. The Washingtonians cashed a good wager when Jim Crow won the sixth race. He was coupled with Math in the field. He left the gate like a scared wolf and raced into a three lengths lead before they had gone an eighth. He had this advantage to the stretch turn, where he bolted to the outside. Smith got him straightened out, and he then cut across to the inside and came near causing a jam. At the end, he came again and, stalling off a challenge from Starray . beat the latter by a length.
