ALL ROADS TO LOUISVILLE » Leading Hotels Already Crowded With Anxious Racing Devotees • Great Concourse to Be on Hand Saturday for Opening of Churchill Downs — More Horses Than Ever Before Available ♦ ROlISVII.,1.10, Ky., May 6. — Ixmisville has already assumed a racing air. though the Churchill Downs spring meeting does not begin until Saturday. Worshippers of "King Horse" have been arriving steadily during the past week from all parts of the country and have already crowded the principal hostelries. Their accommodations are of the contingent variety — they must vacate May 13 to make way for those with Derby reservations. Of course, they are hopeful that in the meantime they will be successful in securing other hotel accommodations or retain their present quarters through cancellations. At no former time has there been such an advance guard and every indication points that the Derby attendance May 15 will be greater than previously. The outstanding won- iderment in connection with this years opening here is the number of horses that intend taking part in the racing. Every available stall at Chun-hill Downs and Douglas Park has been engaged and hundreds of racers have failed to be allotted reservations. There is no understanding for the greater concentration of horsemen this year than formerly. The scenes of activity that have been a daily feature at both the courses reached their height this morning when the I-exing-ton contingent began arriving. Their coming was continuous, by public and private vans and trains. It was well into the night when the last comers were put away and the bulk of the Lexington phalanx will not reach here until Saturday morning, with sorr. scattering ones coming later. Churchill Downs, with its many recent improvements, is one of the outstanding American racing courses. It is not its vastness but its completeness and its arrangement for the comfort of its patrons that attracts most attention. There is still building going on, but everything will be in complete readiness for the opening. Anticipating the arrival of Bubbling Over this morning an eager crowd of the curious as well as owners and trainers were on the outlook for the Bradley ace which has tacitly been accorded the rank as logical defender of this section against the onslaught that the Fast will make t capture honors in the Kentucky Derby. Bubbling Overs performance in the Blue Grass Stakes had preceded him. The newspapers had detailed good accounts of his great achievement, but it fell short of the descriptions detailed by owners, trainers and s|K-ctators that had witnessed Bubbling Over in action yesterday at Iexington. There was a genuine interest in the horse, and his arrival at the Downs was the signal for a great crowd to gather around him. He really looked the champion, and he seemingly sensed the interest in him, for he almost "strutted." His physical perfection brought forth a chorus of admiration from even the critical horsemen. "My, hasnt he spread and filled since a two-year-old," were frequent exclamations Continued on sixteenth pagej ALL ROADS TO LOUISVILLE Continued from first page from those who had not seen him this year. Bubbling Over and several companions formed the advance guard of the Idle Hour Farm representatives that were vanned ov.r by a fleet of motor-propelled vehicles. Bubbling Over indulged in play after stepping off the van. and he was still bucking when brought into his stall in stable number 2. Trainer Thompson was highly elated over Bubbling Overs safe arrival on the ground where he is to strive May 15 for his greatest turf honor. Bubbling Over is ready to race the test, of his life. His trainer holds to the confident belief that he will be in his present superb form when he is brought to the post His final workout in preparation for his Derby start will probably occur Wednesday. The other racers owned by the Idle Hour Farm, but under the supervision of trainer William Hurley, are due to arrive from Lexington tomorrow. Bagenbaggage was shipped this morning to Maryland to race in the Preakness Stakes, to be decided at Pimlico Monday. Trainer Hurley, acompanied by jockey Blind who will ride him also departed at the* same time. Bagenbaggage will be shipped to Churchill Downs Tuesday and will arrive the following day. Phinock. which will carry the Parkview Stables colors, continues to be held as the outstanding eligible that has trained at Churchill Downs and he is given some consideration as a possible winner. He was given a slow workout over the Derby distance this morning and accomplished his task in 2:17%. There were other Kentucky Derby eligibles galloping this morning but there was nothing of an outstanding nature attaching to their performances. The crack. Pompey. and his stable companion. Black Maria, are expected arrivals Saturday. Stalls have been bedded for their reception. A meeting of the stewards of the Kentucky Jockey Club will be held at their office at Churchill Downs Friday for the purpose- of transacting any business that may be needed with owners, trainers, jockeys and others. The stewards will also consider the applications of those whose licenses have not yet been acted upon. A number of such applica tions were held up by the license committee at its recent meeting in Ix-xington for further examination and identity. The stewards will also have a session with the riders holding probationary licenses. They will be given to understand that any deviations from the set rules will result in revocation of their present riding privileges. The rule against agents will be strictly-enforced. Only owners holding contracts on jockeys or their licensed trainers will be privileged to make their jockeys engagements. Much interest is being manifested in the Williams Brothers disposal sale to be held at Douglas Bark. Friday at 2 p. m. There-are many horsemen he-re from other parts, especially to be in attendance at the sale and with a view to making purchases. J. J. Coughlin. Chicago alderman and owner, was a visitor at Churchill Downs this morning to inspect his horses which are in charge of Danny Miller.
