MYRTLE BELLE THE WINNER First in Beulah Park Feature After Hard Fought Finish — Big Crowd Present. COLUMBUS, Ohio. May 7.— For a Friday feature at Beulah Park the most important offering was a claiming race for three-year-iolds and over at five and one-half furlongs. I It resulted in a hard fought contest, in which I the finish was of the most thrilling variety. The winner turned up in W. P. Padgetts Myrtle Belle when, after being outrun to the turn for home, the latter came to the outside of the leaders and, closing gamely under hard urging by jockey J. Connors, got up in I the closing strides to snatch the victory away from Variation. The latter finished resolutely in close quarters next the inner rail after showing the way to the stretch head where Sun Brae went around on the outside and assumed a slight lead which was short lived, as Sun Prae tired slightly in the hard stretch drive which ensued, and Variation I came again near the end to beat Sun Brae by a nose for second place. Ideal conditions for the sport prevailed today, the warm summer like weather attracting an attendance surpassing all records to date. The fair sex turned out in large numbers for the ladies day card. Pacing in her best form, but hard ridden by jockey P. Cogan, and forced to do her best all the way to retain her slight advantage. Silent Lillian registered a victory over Lafe M. and Carlos Enrique in the fourth race. B. Creechs Bedskin making his first start at the meeting and also his initial race of the year, easily accounted for the opening dash in showing the way throughout and drawing away decisively in the stretch run. Having a little the best of a crowded start Lucille Bussell, off forwardly and finding her stride at once, had the most speed in the second race and registered a handy victory but was hard pressed in the final eighth to stall off determined opposition from Merry Mars. Showing the most speed at all stages and hanging on gamely in the stretch, Del Grado defeated his opponents by »a comfortable* margin at the end of the third race. Miss Eugene proved best for second place, gradually overtaking all but the leader after racing on the outside of the others from a slow start. Uoyal Jane showed much improvement racing well up throughout the six and one half furlongs and held the others safe for third place by a big margin. Jockey J. Junot, a free lance rider, also departed for Aurora. Black Friday was excused from the second rae-e today because of bruised ankles. Piatt and Smythe secured Bermuda Lily from Kelly and Wilson at private sale. « .
