1 *. Dick Welles Selections At Churchill Downs "What promises to be the most successful meeting ever to be hold at the famous old Churchill Downs course starts today. The various races were filled to overflowing with fit horses ready to race. Picking the winner at any track on the first day is no easy task, and with the large fields expected to go post-ward today, the work becomes no easier. The main race of the day is the Clark Handicap with its 0,000 added. Nineteen were named through the entry box and a race worthy of the Clark is in anticipation. "With prospects of a clear sky and an exceptionally fast racing strip, Churchill Downs is destined to have a most auspicious opening. MARVIN MAY— DRY MOOX— BRIER HILL. In the opening dash we are picking MARVIN MAY to be the winner. This fine son of McCee hung up an enviable record while racing at this course last fall and continued to do likewise at Jefferson Park, where he won both his races. He is a sprinter of the first order and basing on his trials he should still be in the same good form as was his earlier in the year. PRY MOON put in a busy winter at the far western course at Tijuana. He didnt reach his best form until the latter part of that meeting. On the occasion of his last start he was home the winner in a fast run race. If he hasnt gone back, he should be the one to finish closest to the winner. BRIER HILL had one fair race at the Ivexington meeting and since his last start he turned in a fast workout which compels us to mention him here as the most likely to share in the purse money. AQIITAMA— KRICK— FLORANADA. The Kindergarten Purse, to be run as the second and which calls for two-year-old maiden fillies to race over the four and a half furlongs distance, will, very likely, prove a hard race to pick the winner. Twenty-one were entered and. no matter how many are declared, there will still be many ready to answer the bugle call. As is the case with all large fields, the fast breaker and front runner holds the advantage. AQUITANIA seems to be a filly of this sort. In her only race at Lexington she was off with the rise of the barrier and kept to her task in game style, to be second all the way. If she is fortunate enough today to get away in front, we think she will be the one to score. KRICK turned in a good performance in her last start and, basing on that race, should be the one to earn the place FLORANADA may be good enough to land in the third position. EAGER— THE I.KOl RD— LADY LYNX. Another large field is in order for the third rate. Conditions call for platers to race over the mile and a sixteenth route. A good one is noted in EAGER, which was shipped here from the Havre de Grace meeting. While racing at that course he finished in the money in all his four starts. He rates just a little higher than THK LEOPARD and. if he is not hampered too much at the start, should be the winner. The latter wound up his racing at the Kentucky Association course with an easy win over Halu and Resonance. A race back to that last effort, would make him a hard one to beat. LADY LYNX also scored in her last race and. with the postage stamp weight she is asked to carry, may upset all the calculations. She is in fine form at the present and may be expected to give the others a rare tussle. CAPTAIN HAL— T. S. JORDAN— ARCADT The crack CAPTAIN HAL is to make his first start of the year today in the Kentucky Hotel Purse, but he meets up with some worthy opponents. His last time to the races was at this course last fall, when he scored a most easy win. Reports have It that he profited wonderfully by his winter sojourn and is ready for come what may. That being the case, he should be the one to score here. T. S. JORDAN is looked upon as his most dangerous opponent. He was given two races at Lexington and won them both. He is good in any kind of going and is one of the most consistent racers in action. ARCADY didnt seem to find his racing legs at Lexington, but his last out was a good one, when he finished second to JORDAN. The same effort here should find him close up at the finish today. KING NADI— ROYCROFTER— MARCONI Nineteen were named for the Clark Handicap and we are picking KINO NADI to prove triumphant over ROYCROFTER and MARCONI. Troxler has the son of King James in his best condition for todays stake, and a race to his last years form should find him home a snug winner. He is asked to meet seasoned campaigners in the latter two. but if his form is as reported, j this should not cut much figure. ROYCROFTER partly made amends for his own- j er by finishing second to Carlaris in the Cof-froth Handicap at Tijuana. He is well j thought of by his connections, and they think they may have the Derby winner in him. Be that as it may, ho. stands an excellent chance of getting the place money at least, in todays race. He was treated kindly by the handicapper and is only assigned 104 pounds. Croissant has also named BUCK and ORPHEUS, stable companions of ROYCROF-TER. but they look a little outclassed. MAR- [CONl is one of the L. T. Cooper entry, and at the weights, the Lawrence Realization winner appears to have an excellent chance. GENERAL HA IDE MAN— TORCHILLA —KHALIFA. The Centennial Futurity winner, GENERAL HALDEMAN, looks like the best play on the card today. His last race was such an impressive win that it is hard to figure how he is going to lose today. He is giving weight away to every other starter in the race, but at that, is carrying four pounds less than in his last race. The one thought able to give the General the most trouble in his hist race was TORCHILLA. He met with misfortune soon after the start when his jockey lost a stirrup, and he had to be eased up. Todays race should afford a fine opportunity of deciding whether or not his is the Generals equal. Khalifa, one ofj Sen. Johnson N. Camdens own breeding, ran two good races at Lexington, winning one and finishing second in the other. If he would race as well today, think he will : take care of the show end of the purse. | CLOISTER— MORNING CLOUD— WATERFLAG. The winter campaigner. CLOISTER, figures to be the winner of the concluding race. While racing at Miami he proved most consistent and has but to race as kindly today to bo returned the winner. MORNING CLOUD found the course at Tampa to her liking and managed to score a couple of close victories. Since arriving here she has been working in a manner to suggest that she will continue to race in the same form. WATERFLAG, a Croissant filly, has also turned in some fast moves and may be the l one to save the show.
