POMPEY READY FOR DERBY W R Coes Champion Works a Mile in 139 25 Under Restraint Canter Goes Mile and an Eighth in 157 25 Preahness Winner Display Given Slow Gallop Indications Now Point to a Field of Fourteen LOUISVILLE Ky May 13 After Edward R Bradleys Bubbling Over had enter ¬ tained with a creditable Derby trial Wednesday morning when he galloped a mile and a quarter in 2 OSvf Pompey the hope of New York was put through his paces this morning W R Coes good son of Sun Briar and Cleopatra was only asked to gallop a mile and he finished the distance with the greatest of ease in 1 39 It was known that the Eastern champion was to work out and a large gallery was on hand for the occasion That he created a favorable impression could not be denied for all through his gallop he was at all times under a steadying restraint and the pace was an even one He galloped the first quarter in 24 the next eighth in 11 and the next eighth in 12 completing the half mile in 47 He ran the five eighths in 100 and the three quarters in 1 13 seven eighths in 124 and finished out the mile in 139 139Pompey Pompey carried approximately 120 pounds and Kenneth Karrick who supervised the work was stopping the exercise boy for most of the journey journeyThe The track was in excellent condition when this time was made and as a matter of fact it was in no sense a sensatfonal move when compared with the work of some of the others and ordinary horses that galloped during the work hours It was only impres ¬ sive for the reason that the move was so easily accomplished and suggested that Wil ¬ liam Karrick who will not arrive from Bel mont Park until tomorrow has shipped out a fit colt for the big race Saturday SaturdayCanter Canter also was given a Derby trial and worked a mile and an eighth in 1 57 He was always well under restraint and trainer Harry Rites expressed satisfaction with his charges performance Canter has never been regarded seriously as a work horse horseRhinock Rhinock was worked a mile and a quarter under his Derby weight and finished the distance in 2ll7s He was under restraint for the entire distance distanceBoot Boot to Boot was given a sharp mile can ¬ ter in 1 43s American Son went three quarters in 114 Vi Boot to Boot was only allowed to race in full stride during the last quarter quarterDisplay Display winner of the 192G Preakness Stakes was only cantered at a slow pace around the track a couple of miles to let him become accustomed to his surroundings He will probably be called on to show his best pace Friday in a threequarters mile pre ¬ liminary Rock Man is another that will be called on for a speed test of short duration Friday FridayLast Last night and today there were several arrivals from New York and the East and with the corning of the sportsmen there was something of a boost in the Pompey market but it will take more than the visitors from the East to shake the confidence of the Kcn tuckians in their own champion Bubbling Over The son of North Star III Beaming Beauty remains secure as first horse for the big race locally and nearly all of those who have come from both New York and Mary ¬ land share in the general Kentucky opinion that the conqueror of Bubbling Over will in ¬ scribe his name as winner of the Derby DerbyThose Those who saw the race of Display and Blondin in the Preakness at Pimlico Mon ¬ day have a becoming appreciation of both colts and some of them are predicting that Continued on sixteenth pace POMPEY READY FOR DERBY Continued from first page when Pompey and Bubbling Over are through setting the dazzling pace that is expected that one or the other of them will come along in the last quarter to snatch the big prize off for the East EastThe The late comers are nearly all on the grounds at this time and as the date of the big nice approaches there comes an increased interest and an interest that is far from being centered on two horses Bubbling Over and Pompey though they are naturally the two that stand out with greatest prominence prominenceWhile While Bagenbaggagc did not distinguish himself in the running of the Preakncss he is still considered a worthy companion to Bubbling Over Saturday and it has been intimated that his showing at Pimlico could be attributed to the going at the Baltimore track rather than any lack of quality qualityAnd And while Canter was soundly beaten in the Preakness being unable to stay for a mile and threesixteenths the Marylanders are by no means ready to discard him for the Derby DerbyBut But it was hard for many to understand why Rock Man was brought on from Mary ¬ land when it was shown so conclusively that the Derby route is beyond him But Rock Man might cut a figure in the defeat of some others even though not able to win himself He is possessed of a great turn of spaed and it is entirely possible that he might last long enough to take so much of a better horse that he would not have a winning chance left when the stretch was reached reachedUntil Until the Preakness was run Rock Man had beaten Canter every time he met him and in the running of the Preakness the pace that Rock Man carried Mr Griffiths colt in the early stages played its part in his defeat defeatTomorrow Tomorrow will mark the arrival of some or the special trains from Chicago The Edge water Beach Hotel special carrying a big delegation of guests from the famous north side hostelry personally in charge of man ¬ ager William Dewey will depart Thursday night and they will visit French Lick Jnd before coming on to the Downs The noted notedOriole Oriole Band is coming with the Edgewater Beach Hotel delegates and in conjunction with the HeraldExaminer the Edgewater Beach Hotel broadcasting station will radio the Derby and incidents of Derby day by remote control controlOther Other specials trains that will beunderway Thursday night include the Lake Shore Athletic Club delegation the Illinois Athletic Club contingent the Hamilton Club the Chicago Athletic Club the McCnbe special and the special in charge of Sam Wolfe
