Here and There on the Turf John Madden s Success Nichavo Redeems Himself Carabiniers Victory Sun Flags Future John E Madden some time ago announced that he was through breeding thoroughbreds for the market but it is greatly to be hoped that he will continue to give the turf the champions that have kept his name at the top of the list of American breeders for so long and continuously Thoroughbreds pro ¬ duced by Mr Madden from 1917 to the end of last year won a total of 3061 races and in each year except 1924 they also won more money than the horses of any other breeder But for seven years the Maddenbreds have stood at the top as the winners of a greater number of races than any other otherAnd And with Mr Madden to retire as a public breeder it is interesting to take up the entries of any one day of racing and count the number of horses bred by John E Madden that are racing throughout the country For the racing of Monday and it perhaps showed fewer of the produce of Hamburg Place than usual just some of the Maddenbreds entered at Belmont Park Woodbine Park in Canada Aurora in Illinois and Louisville in Kentucky were Rocky Lane Flat Iron Pat McGee Middle West Repulse Joy Smoke Lampus Margaret Gaut Norseland Mercutio Gilmore Black Top and Sheffield SheffieldSeveral Several of these were scratched but there were three winners and a third from the num ¬ ber The most remarkable winner was Edward I Whitneys Joy Smoke the sterling son of Sir Martin and Sweet Briar by Star Shoot He was the winner of the Toronto Cup Handi ¬ cap at a mile and an eighth which was worth 98530 to the winner The other winners were Mercutio and Lampus while it was Shef ¬ field that ran third thirdAnd And just what John E Madden has done for breeding is shown in a measure when it is remembered that he bred both the sire and dam of Joy Smoke the best winner of the day as well as breeding the horse himself That is the breeding that counts and it is the breeding that has kept Mr Madden for so long continu ¬ ously at the top of the list No breeder ever made a more careful study of blood lines and no breeder ever sent so many champions to the races racesIt It would be little short of a calamity to entirely lose John Madden as a breeder for the market When Nichavo galloped off with the Free port Handicap at a mile at Belmont Park on Monday it was easily understood why Sam Hildreth had shipped him to Baltimore to start in the Preakness Stakes of the Maryland Jockey Club at Pimlico The son of Lucullite performed disappointingly in that race as did some other brilliant prospects but now it is assured that he did not run his race at Pimlico PimlicoNichavo Nichavo has not accomplished anything of particular note this year with the possible exception of the Freeport Handicap but he showed enough by the character of that per ¬ formance to hold out bright hope that he will yet race his way high up among the best of the threeyearolds threeyearoldsIt It may be readily argued that the defeat of Tall Wood Liane Hang On and Acrostic was not enough to occasion any extravagant hopes but there is no good reason to believe that he cannot beat much better ones when the oc ¬ casion arises He did not have a Pompey or a Bubbling Over in the beaten ones back of him There was no Carlaris or Haste to make him run He did not have Rock Man to force him along or a Bagenbaggagc to mow him down in the stretch and there are several others of the aspirants to the three3earold cham ¬ pionship with which Nichavo can hardly be compared until he has accomplished more but he has earned his right to another try with the best of them and it is entirely possible that he has found himself and will go on to much better things When the French steeplechaser Carabinier was the winner of the Woodbine Steeplechase Handicap over the two and a half miles Cana ¬ dian course on Monday he at once restored himself to a position among the best of the jumpers on this continent The victory also suggested that Specs Crawford has lost none of his skill through the field fieldCarabinier Carabinier was giving away great lumps of weight when he shouldered 158 pounds for the long and trying race and his condition for a first start of the year also told of the skill of Thomas H McCreery as a trainer The sturdy son of ExVoto and Carbine by Verdun spent the winter at Aiken and it was there that he was hardened for his campaign He had a long and careful preparation in which Crawford played an important part and now with his first race against horses seasoned with actual racing this year he was winner of a 7500 race raceWith With such a beginning Carabinier has every opportunity to go along to big things during the year He is bountifully engaged in all the crosscountry stakes and his first important New York engagement conies in the 10000 Charles L Appleton Memorial of two miles to be decided at Belmont Park on Saturday It is not known that he will be shipped from Woodbine Park for that race but he has several other big opportunities during the year and in his present condition he will undoubt ¬ edly meet those engagements When Gifford A Cochrans Sun Flag gal ¬ loped home such an easy winner over the threequarters of the Widiner Course at Bel ¬ mont Park on Monday it marked his first appearance under colors since November 13 1924 That race was in the mile and an eighth of the Pimlico WeightforAge Serials and he was its winner from Donaghee and Senator Norris in easy fashion fashionThe The late William Duke was unable to bring the son of Sun Briar to the races last year and it was just about agreed that his turf career was ended Now the younger Duke his fathers successor has brought Sun Flag back and the way he galloped home indicated that he is ready for a mile or even a greater distance distanceSun Sun Flag was purchased by Mr Cochran for 25000 at one of Mr Kilmers dispersal sales and until he went amiss he frequently showed high class Young Duke seems to have restored him to his best form judging by his victory and he may quickly take his place high up among the handicap horses of the year yearAnd And it was expected by his young trainer that Sun Flag would come back when he was engaged in the Toboggan Handicap Metropoli ¬ tan Handicap Suburban and the Speed Handi ¬ cap to be run at the Belmont Park meeting Then just for good measure he was also named in the Hollis Stakes and the Harlem Stakes two races under claiming conditions It is safe to promise he will not be started in a claiming stake as long as he holds the form he displayed in his first start after his long retirement With Black Maria and Rapture both at Churchill Downs to start in the Kentucky Oaks New York has a strong hand for the running of that old fixture Rapture was the winner of the Pimlico Oaks with Blark Maria finishing third but in the recent Ladies Handicap Black Maria decisively turned the tables on the Whitney filly and it was argued with good reason that Black Maria had not run her race at Pimlico Then those who are for Rapture pointed out that the Whitney fill by reason of her unruly action at the post in the Ladies had scant chance chanceThus Thus it is that no matter what Kentucky fillies oppose the pair there will be great interest in their meeting again The Kentucky Oaks will be something of a final between the
