SECOND DAY AT AQUEDUCT ♦ Tester Wins Broadway Stakes in a Spirited Finish. • Cartoonist Outlasts Sanfonl in Olambala Handicap, After Hard Fought and BaaM Struggle. NEW YORK. X. Y.. June 15.- For the second day of the Aqueduct meeting the stake offering was the Kockaway. a claiming race over the three-quarters route. It brought about a great finish when C. C. Winfreys Tester, under a good ride by Sande. led the Sage Stables Appleciross home, with W. A. Wollmaus Yolante a close third. Bat what was of really more racing interest than the ltockaway was; the Olambala Handicap over the mile route. This resulted in another great finish when Bud Fishers Cartoonist, after having forced all the pace, just lasted to beat the Bosedale Stables Sanford. Five lengths back of these. Mothers Son saved third from Sunspero. and I.iane was the only other starter. There was a gocdly crowd out and, while rain threatened frequently during the afternoon, the weather was delightful, though a high wind prevented anything in the way of fast time in the races. In this Olambala Handicap. Turner had the mount on Cartoonist, and he was a decided improvement over Kellum. who rode the old son of Celt in his previous start. Once he had him clear of his company. Turner rated the big chestnut along and. nursing him without surrendering the lead, he kept just enough in reserve to withstand that final rush of Sanford. Sunspero was the one to go after Cartoonist until well into the stretch. Then, when Sande drove the son of Sun Briar, he rushed across Cartoonists heels to the inner rail and. seeing his mount was well beaten, Sande did not persevere with him. In the meantime. Sanford came with a rush on the outside of the Fisher gelding, and it was a rush that was just a stride short of victory. It is probable that Sande might have saved third had he punished Sunspero in that last eighth, for Mothers Son was five lengths hack of the first two, but he was there in time to take the short end of the purse. The stake 6t the day was the Rockaway. a three-quarters dash under claiming conditions and there were fifteen went to the post. It resulted in a victory for J. C. Winfreys Tester, well ridden by Sande. and he was only winner after a stretc.i drive to beat home Applecross. from the Sage Stable, with W. A. Wollmans Volante across third before Centrifugal, the Flamingo Farm Stables starter. There was a considerable delay at the barrier, but the start was a good one. though some of those on the etxreme outside were naturally under some handicap. Continued on twentieth page. SECOND DAY AT AQUEDUCT Oontinned from first pace Sande was particularly alert and his mount was good enough to force all the pace. Volants and Splinters were close after the Winfrey gelding and the others were strung along, with Afton one of the unfortunates and trying to bear out in the early racing. Volants made a determined 1 id in the long stretch and for an instant he promised to rim over Tester, but he tired badly in the final eighth and it was there that Applecross made, the rush that landed him safely in second place. Victrix, the chestnut daughter of VindeK and The Lost Bird, that races for J. I*. MoGovern. was graduated from the ranks of the maidens in the opening five-eighths dash. It was a juvenile race for non-winners and under claiming conditions, and the filly showed a good performance when she took up 117 pounds and gave away considerable weight to all the other starters. She was doing her best at the end to lead home Tipperary Mary from the Mirasol Stable, and 1. II. Faulconers Laska saved third. There came a Rancocas victory in the second race, when Nedana. top weight of rather a nice company, led home the Xalapa Farm Stables Loved One, with A. IL Morris Genuine beating Walter J. Salmons Bowhatan for third. Sande beat the harrier with Loved fine and sent her into an early lead, but Nedana was soon after her and then OoBBtee raced around and, as he moved, Loved One was knocked back badly. Powhatan moved up and, for an instant, it seemed that the advantage at the start enjoyed by Loved One was to go for naught. Nedana shook off the others and led into the stretcb, whore Ioved One was headed by both Genuine and Bowhatan. but she was not through and, under a vigorous ride, closed until in the last eighth she passed the other two, but could not catch Nedana. Genuine outgamed Bowhatan when the Salmon sprinter bore out rather badly right at the end. The Others of the company cut less figure in the running. The fifth was at a mile in which the maiden riders, performed and. as usual, it was a miserable affair. Kathleen Crosby, a filly that in just such races at Belmont Bark was severely beaten in a race that fell to Frigate, was the winner and Frigate was soundly beaten. Margaret St. L. raced to second place and Bapa Blinks beat Zeod for third. Such races clutter up a program. They are of no special value in fixing the form of a horse by reason of the inexperience of the riders and it is doubtful if the riders ever learn anything in that fashion. At the end of the program Cantankerous, from the Oreentree Stable, was rather a handy winner from A. C. Bostwicks Hignus and Bilotta. from the Coodestone Stable, saved third from Crystal Domino. Sun Forward, a starter from the W. S. Kilmer stable, propped at the start, but the others wen; away in excellent alignment and no excuse could be found for any of them.
