DOUBLE FOR ROSS STABLE ♦ Wheatstick Carries Its Colors to Victory in Fort Erie Handicap. » Attica Does likewise in Ihe Maple Purse — Jockey Peternel Figures Prominently in Hays Sport. ♦ - • FORT BRIE, Ont.. June 23.— Wheatstick made it a double for the popular Ross stable when he accounted for the Fort Erie Handicap, the feature offering of the day, when he passed the winning mark a half length in the van. The Green Briar Stables South Wind beat Begonia by a length and a half for second place. The winner was given but weak support in the machines and returned a handsome dividend for those that follow the Ross stable. From a good start. Martingale having the most speed, raced into the lead going to the first turn, with Gold Rock right at his flanks and full of run. When straightened out on the back stretch the latter raced by Martingale and showed the way until rounding the turn where there was a general closing up of the field. Wheatstick at this point had moved into a contending position and, continuing gamely, wore the pacemaker down and maintained his short lead to the end, although it is doubtful if he would have beaten South Wind had he secured a clear passage, Peternel being forced to take up sharply making the turn out of the back stretch. Once clear. South Wind fairly flew and was wearing the winner down. With a continuation of summerlike weather there was a decided increase in the attendance here today and those favored by the half holiday pursued the sport of Kings mingling with the regulars and treating their voices to a long waited want. Wagering was on the brisk side and handsome prices were returned throughout the afternoon. Jockey Peternel rode two winners in the days proceedings, just failing to make it three when he was beaten on South Wind. Attica, sporting the colors of Com. J. K. L. Ross of Montreal, withstood a drive in gallant fashion to annex the major portion of the Maple Purse, which inaugurated festivities today, the race being a five-eighths dash for two-year-olds bred in Canada. Attica, in her winning performance, was sent into the lead with the stoutly supported choice Bloomtip right at her heels and racing strongly. Attica held to her lead with good courage and, after being headed at the eighth post, withstood a hard drive in excellent fashion and received the verdict by a head. Fleur-de-Lis, from the Seagram Stable, was a fast going third. Links made good in the third race, a mile and one-sixteenth dash, that brought ten to the post to vie for honors. Links was installed the choice, but as usual dropped out of contention in the early stages, while. Timeless and Rosa Yeta raced closely lapped and the remainder of the field, with the exception of the winner, within striking distance. When set down for the final dash ■ inks mowed his competitors down in rapid succession, gained the lead after passing the eighth post and drew into a lead of two and one-half lengths. Timeless after racing HOOT Yeta into defeat was forced to a hard drive to outstay The Fenian, whvh closed Continued on twentieth pajje. DOUBLE FOR ROSS STABLE Continued from first pare with a great rush after encountering early interference. After following the pace for three-eighths of the second race, Reigh Shot came with a rush through the stretch and, disposing of Sol and Master Maid, put the favorite players back on an equal footing from the loss sustained when Hlootntip failed in the opening contest. Sol showed excellent speed from the rise of the barrier and opened up a two-length margin rounding the turn into the stretch, with Master Maid forcing the pace and the winner in third position. Smith called on his mount at the turn into the stretch, assumed command midway of the stretch and was winner by a length and well under restraint. Eda C. made up a large amount of ground to get as close as fourth. Alletache graduated from the maiden class when she accounted for the fourth race, a three-auarters dash in a terrific drive from Ace of Aces II., and I ownsview getting third place. There were twelve starters in this race and starter Cassidy experienced some difficulty in getting the field away. After a few minutes they left in good alignment and Ace of Aces II.. the speedy foreigner, moved into the lead, with Successor and Danger Signal his nearest pursuers for the first half mile. Hounding the turn Peternel sent the Kilmer s arter up on the outside and racing to the leader with good courage matched strides faithfully to get the verdict in the last twenty yards. Alletache by accounting for this race made it three consecutive favorites to score brackets. Tamarind was dropped into an easy spot and scored brackets with something to spare over Midinette and four others that paraded in the three-quarters dash of the semi-final race of the day. Reserved off the pace cut out by Skirmisher and Theo. Fay for the first half mile. Bourassa sent the winner into the lead at the top of the home stretch and had very little trouble holding Midinette safe through the final furlong.
