TWO YOUNG JOCKEYS 1 » R. Jones and G. Philpot in Limelight at Fairmount Park. Each Rides Three Winners, the First Mentioned Consecutively — Day of Interesting Sport. ♦ COLLI XSVILRK. 111.. June 24 —Fairmount Park racing patrons were furnishcel a spectacular brand of racing this afternoon, featured by close finishes and the victories of those most extensively backed. Added feature was furnished by the diminutive apprentices here. R. Jones and G. Philpot. Keen rivalry exists between these youngster, and both are decidedly popular with racegoers here. Jones probably has a slight call over the Chula Vista Stables contract rider and. when he piloted three of his mounts to victory in a row, the big crowd gave him a. rousing reception. Philpot also landed three winners, inaugurating with the victory of his contract employers Sweepover and culminating when Rulletin landed the sixth race. Ihilpits other successful mount was Chie-k I "p. the only long priced winner of the afternoon. AVell matched starters took part in all the mean, the fourth, fifth and sixth races serving as headliners. H. Teller Archibalds first time starter. Candy Queen, furnished the outstanding incident of the racing during the afternoon, when site beat home a ge od band of two-year-olds that started with her in the five-eighths dash. She won with the greatest ease and raced like a crack, for she sprinted away from the others and increased her advantage: with every stride, to finally win as her ride-r elected and broke the track record for five-eighths, when she raced the distance in 1 :00. Shasta Negra and Shasta Cold, both from the H. D. Brown Stable, finished second and third. DOURI-E FOR S. I.OCIS. Sam Rouis carried off a double for the afternoon with his French I.ady and Rady Bountiful. Both were favorites and ridden by R. Jones, who also was astride Candy Queen. The Rouis pair had to be urged hard to win in their respective races, and Jones contributed to their success by his good riding. French Rady was probably lucky te win at that, for Harpenden, making his first racing start in this country, was probably pounds the best, but inexperience caused him to bolt at the stretch turn, after having taken command with a good show of speed. Rady Bountifuls triumph was only after the most stubborn duel with John S. Mosby. The latter only gave way in the cle sing stretch to enable Rady Bountiful to register. Jockey G. Wilson, who rode John S. Mosby. was suspended for five days by the starter for disobedience at the post. Another spirited duel came in the closing race, in which Alarel and Dr. T. S. Habney figured as the chief factors, with Alarel finally winning. Ferguson landed in third place. There was considerable activity in the ring for Uncle Hugh, and it resulted in his being installed the favored one. He flattered for the first half mile, but thereafter retired and brought up in last place. The Chula Vista Stables Sweepover accounted for the opener but only after a furious performance anil succeeding in winning from Old Race by a matter of Inches, with Tempter closely in the- wake of the pair. Te-mpter was probably the best in the race! but Shasta Rock kept him in close quarters for the first five-eighths, in addition to forcing him to extend himself to the limit Sweepover came with a good rush right at the end and was successful in outstaying Old Race. The latter also showed a good performance. Majoe and Scholarship, expected to be factors, were never strongly in the running. CHICK IP IN FAST FINISH. Twelve platers started in the second race, at three-cptarters. anil here too e-ame a rattling finish with Chick Cp passing funic ■ in the last twenty yards to get the verdict. Choice, after racing Wellfinder into defeat. appeared to have the race won. but tired when Chick Cp came with his rush. Well-tineler gave way completely in the last sixteenth anei just managed to last lemg enough to retain third place from the fast finishing Trnpdnlc and Jaunehar. I.ady Braxted made an impressive showing here. Cheatham got her away poorly, and she closed an immense gap when urged hard in the stretch. French Lady, backed into favoritism, was returned Wllinei of the third race over Reap and the first time starter Harpenden. The latter is 1 Inglish-hre.l and was making his American racing debut He was probably beat in the- rae e-. but lack of rae ing e-x|xri-• nee caused him to holt at the stretch turn after he had come from far hacl to assume the lead. His winning chance was destroyed when he meed wide, end it enabled French I.aih to move jnto the lead and hold Reap safe- during the last eighth. Harpenden. coming again under puuishme-nt. nucceeded in outstaying Kmancip.it ion for third [dace.
