VAIN I.ADY was saved behind the leaders till passing the far turn, then came on gamely and, heading the leaders in the stretch, was doing her host at the- end to outfinish JIM SMICK. The latter lest ground on the first turn, but came again in the last eighth and finished fastest of all. DETROIT began slowly, but closed an enormous gap. LlLIE DEAR took the lead after entering the stretch when OXA1.1S quit, hut tired herself ill the final drive.
