SCORE DOUBLE AT JAMAICA ♦ Jockeys Stevens and Fator and Bancocas Colors in Limelight. ■ ♦ IViccman Captures Merrick Handicap, Feature of Program — I.eatherwood Furnishes Surprise in Third Race. MBW YoRK. K Y. April 29.— The best Jamaica offering today was the Merrick Handicap of one mile and seventy yards and it brought victory to Charles Fra neks Price-man when he caught and passed the Pelair Stud Stables Amberjack in the final sixteenth to win, while the Creentree Stables herry I*ie saved third place from William Ziegler Jr.s Our Ceneral. Further back came Irippeminaud. Son of John, a first-class handicap racer at Miami during the winter, and tiamble, a stablemate of Our General. The weather was pleasant for the sport and while the skies were overcast the temperature had moderated and the conditions were much more pleasant than any time since the opening of the meeting. The track had dried out considerably and while not at its best, could be rated as good. When Priceman was winner of the feature race it marked up a double for jockey J. Stevens, for he had brought Leatherwocd home in front of some cheap ones in the preceding race. Little time was lost at the barrier and as it was released the field was in good alignment, but Amberjack jumped straight in the air and was last to leave. He had the inside position and McAuliffe sent him up next to the rail with such a rush that he was showing the way at the first turn. Son of John was racing along back of him and Iriceman followed the Jefferson Livingston campaigner, with the others in fairly close order and. Our General last- Mc.Auliffe permitted Amberjack to speed along at a pace that carried him to the half-mile j ost in :46% and he reached the three-quarter post in 1 :12. With all that speed McAuliffe never gave the colt a chance to take a long breath and still he looked a winner as he swung into the stretch. But Stevens had gradually worked his way up with Priceman, and as Son of John tired chasing the leader, he sent him through on the inside. PACE BEGINS TO TELL. An eighth out Amberjack was still clear and McAuliffe was sitting still, but the early pace was taking its toll, and in that last eighth Priceman drew alongside and then on past until he was a length and a half clear at the end. Amberjack was four lengths in front of Cherry Pie, while Our General, closing a big gap and gaining rapidly on the others at the end, was only beaten a head for third place. Cheops, from the Raneoeas Stable, made a show of the four others that opposed him in the second race, when he led home Sandy, from the B. B. Stable, with James McAu-liifes Colonel Seth third. William Zeigler Jr.s Flechita fourth, and James Butlers Bright Steel last. Fator rode a wonderfully confident race on the son of John P. Grier. and he permitted Colonel Seth to lead his mount into the stretch. There, when an eighth from home, he shook up Cheops and in a few strides he was alongside and from then on came home a winner under restraint. Colonel Seth tired badly in the final eighth an.l Sandy outfinished him to take second pace, while Flechita, though well beaten, showed improvement over her recent performance. As for Bright Steel, he had no A big field of cheap ones started in the three-quarter mile third race and it resulted in one of the thrills of the day when Charles Rerraros I.* atherwood just got up to win from J. Clarks Fourteen Sixty and F. W. Barlows The Vintner. The start was a good one and it was Fourteen Sixty that set the pace. Leatherwood was in the front division and so was The Vintner, while Firedog met with early interference. It was apparent that Zoeller was of no help to The Vintner. Until inside the final seventy yards Fourteen Sixty looked all over the winner, but Lcatherwood had been fighting his way up resolutely on the inside, and it was only in the stretch drive that he found room to come through to win by a head. The Vintner was a length and a half further back after having been badly messed about. Kimball Patterson arrived yesterday at Jamaica with his stable.
