SWEEPSTAKES IN THRILLER « Outlasts Brownie Smile In Spectacular Finish at Columbus. • RrMilt In Doubt Intil Official Placing Is Announced — Sport at Ilrulali Park I elight! Jood!y Crowd. ♦ COLUMBUS. Ohio. May 5— Coming from the middle of the bunch at the head of the stretch, Mrs. M. Hunters Sweepstakes got up in the final strides of the mile and seventy yards journey to win from Brownie Smile in a finish that was so close that the spectators were unable to separate them and the winner was in doubt until the numbers were flashed on the official board. Sweepstakes was slow to find his stride, but Thrailkill was patient, allowing the son of Sweep — Gold Ten plenty of time before rushing him along. Once on his stride, he displayed the running ability which has so often carried him along to victory in the past, steadily overtaking his opponents. He was forced to go around on the extreme outside to secure clear passage, but once straightened out for the run home, he rapidly wore down the others, just managing to get up in the last stride, as previously stated, to win. while Optimist was third. The opening dash, over the five-eighths route, was won by Big Moscpjito, in a driving finish, from Square Jack and Shoplifter. The winner was ably ridden by jockey D. Fowler. Breaking quickly, he was hustied into the lead, but on reaching the first turn the Wishard gelding bolted to the outside, permitting Square Jack, which circled close to | the inner rail, to secure command. Fowler quickly straightened his mount out and, driving to the utmost, again raced up to contest the leadership, but as they reached the final turn. Big Mosquito again bore out, losing much ground. It was here that Fowler brought to command all his riding ability, urging his mount by hand and whip, till at the last stride he landed a short nose in front of Square Jack. LEONARD G. UNRULY. The third race, for four-year-olds and upward, over the three-quarter distance, brought a field of ten to the post with the winner turning up in V. Clouds Deadfall, ridden by Kenneth Noe. Nero was second with May Bruen third. The stait was delayed by the unruly actions of Leonard G.. which, when the barrier was sprung, wheeled behind his opponents and was practically left. May Bruen assumed the pacemakers task closely pressed by Deadfall with Xero leading the others. As the leaders reached the far turn, Noe commenced his driv-- that soon carried him on even terms with the leader, but the latter gamely held on. battling it out until well in the home stretch before she gave way allowing Deadfall to go on to victory, while Nero also i assed her before the finish line v as reach* d. Kill, which runs in the silks of W. L. "Pa" Strihling. furnished tin- outstanding upset of the day when she won the fourth race in a driving finish from the public choice Mr. Plaid, with Embryo third. The winner paid $.".7.40 for the usual investment. The vinn -r assumed command at the rise | j of the barrier, setting a fast pace, but inclined to run wide on the turns. The daughter of Cataract — Adoration displayed real game-ness by the manner in which she withstood the long stretch drive to hold a half length lead over Mr. Plaid as they passed the judges stand. Al Hotfoot came boa behind I,afe M. as the field entered the home stretch in the second race, drawing away at the end to a two-length victory, while Lafe M. was a like distance in front of Piedmont, which was third. The patrons were treated to an added thrill when Kinfolks, ridden by jockey F. Marsden. who was in the rear as they made the last turn, suddenly went down, throwing jockey Marsden who. luckily, received no injuries He quickly regained his feet, as did the horse.
