PANDERA IN TRIUMPH ♦ Captures "Pimlico Oaks in Defeating Fair Star Narrowly. • Abels Brilliant Finish On Whitney Filly Brings Victory — Black Panther Qualifies. BALTIMORE. Md.. May 5.— The Pimlico Oaks, oae of the Maryland Jockey Clubs famous old fixtures, was the attraction that brought out a large gathering at the old hi 11 -top course this afternoon. They witnessed a stilling contest in which Harry Payne Whitneys Pandera was the winner from Kair Star, which runs for W. DuPont, Jr.s Foxcateher Farm Stable. Pandera was ridden by A. Abel, and she beat Fair Star by a head. It was a grand struggle between the two all through the home stietch. and when the final test came Pandera proved the gamer under a rousing finish. Fair Stars defeat was due to jockey Abel being the better finisher. There were nine starters and Pandera and Fair Star carried the bulk of the money wagered. There was a big play on the Whitney filly right at post time and she went to the post favorite. In the early running Digitus outran her rivals and drew away into a long lead rounding the first turn. Straightened out on the back stretch Abel sent Pandera up to the pace maker and, passing the half mile post, the latter went to the front and led Mgim by ■ length with Fair Star in thiid place another head away Bourassa was sitting still and he never made no effort until well around the bend for home. When he let Fair Star down she moved up with a rush and at the top of the stretch she had a lengths lead over the Whitney filly. It looked like a case of all over but the shouting at this stage. Abel, however, was working on Pandera and she re-spmded with sp.endid courage. SHOWS BULL-DOG COUKAOF. In the last sixteenth she began raining on the leader and in the final drive .night an«l passed Fair Star. In the last few strides Pandera displayed bull-dog courage when Fair Star appeared to falter. Abels finish was much the stronger of the two riders. Signola was third, beaten eight lengths for second place, and three lengths further back came Aromagne. The net value of the stake to the winner was .4." 0. Pandera s victory marked the third for the Whitney Stable in the Oaks: Gadfly winning in 1923 and Rapture in 192G. Waiter J. Salmons three-year-old Black Panther qualified for the Preakness Stakes when he galloped home an easy winner over Penstiek and Mariner in the Arundel Purse, a dash of a mile and seventy yards. Black Panther beat Penstiek by three parts of a length. He eould have made it a longer margin, had Maiheii so wished. The latter rode in the most confident manner. He never let Bla. -k raiither down until they entered the home streteh. where he moved tip on the out-s le with great ease. After getting on even t. raw with the other two he again took Black Panther in hand, and at the finish he appeared to be only cantering. Mariner showed a lot of early speed, but when the real issue came he tired, and was beaten a length and a half for second place. KIIIWICI mi wiNM.it. When Smoot led B.veivvy.k down he easily disposed of Winoya and drew away into a long lead. At the end fee was eased up and be;it Horace Groom by a length and a half. At the sixteenth post the latter looked to be a certain winner, but at the end he tired and Mark Master, coming from behind with a rush, got up in the last twenty yards to win going away. An interesting feature of this rare was the fact that three brothers sported colors — M. M.rgler rode Leda, D. Mergler, Immolator, and J. C. Mergler, Copey Boy. .Nine faced the barrier for the sixth race. which was decided over three quarters, and another set of brackets added to the winning list of Bernard Hardings Negofol filly Suky, when she scored in a die from E.
