DERBY GALLOPS AT DOWNS . . « — — — Candy Queen, Boiled Stocking, War Eagle Work Impressively. « Last Mentioned to Go In Clark Handicap Saturday — Bewithus and Other Bradley Horses Arrived Safely. • LOUISVILLE, May 5.— Impressive trials by some of the leading candidates for the Kentucky Derby, which will have renewal a week from Saturday, punctuated a morning of extensive training activity at Churchill Downs today. While nothing spectacular was attempted or accomplished the trials of Rolled Stocking, Candy Queen and War Eagle were well worthy of candidates for such an important and valuable race. Rolled Stocking, from the stable of J. W. Parrish, and one of the chief reliances of the West, contributed a mile in 1 :43 as his first workout over a distance of ground since arriving from Lexington several days ago. With his older stable companion Percentage working with him, and on ever terms for the first three-quarters, they were timed in :23% for the first quarter, -ASM for the half mile and 1 :15 for the three-quarters. As they finished the three-quarters Rolled Stocking began drawing away from Percentage and led him to the end of the mile by about one-half of a length. Both horses were in hand throughout their works, with W. Poole astride the Derby nominee. Percentages move was his final stiff preparation for his engagement in the Clark Handicap, which features Saturdays opening day program at the Downs. This four-year-old son of Midway and Gossip Avenue must carry 108 pounds in the 0,000 added race and. on his present form, appears a strong contender. Candy Queen, the star of the pretentious stable of H. T. Archibald, ran a mile in 1 :44t5, the daughter of Stefan the Great, and the only filly listed among the certain starters for the Derby, being under Lee Mc-Dermotts stout hold throughout the gallop. The fractional time for the easy trial was : :2475, :50t5 and 1 :16?s. The fractions reveal the eveness with which tne filly was rated over the ground and she pulled up slowly to permit the negotiation of a longer distance without need of the effort put into the mile. Trainer George Walker was satisfied with the work and reports that jockey P. Walls, contract rider for the Archibald Stable, who will have the mount on Candy Queen in the Derby, will be here next week and probably be astride the filly in her final trials. War Eagle, which will make his local debut in the Clark Handicap Saturday, was sent over one mile in 1 :4375, the E. B. McLean Derby hopeful being unextended at any stage of the gallop. He was running handily as he completed the mile, after going the first quarter in :25ts, half in SDg and three-quarters in 1 :17M;. It was a fine work and well reflects this colts present fine form.
