SPECTACULAR GALLOP ♦ Fair Stables Derby Candidates Run Three-Quarters in 1:13%. J. J. Coughlin s Wacker Drive On Ailing List — Irish Pal Impresses Over Seven-Eighths. LOUISVILLE. Ky.. April 5.— All Kentucky Derby local training records at three-Quarters- for the present year were surpassed at Douglas Par.; this morning, and a new mark hung up for the other eligibles to shoot at, when the Fair Stables pair of candidates. Oh Say and War Flier, galloped the distance in 1:13% and pulled up none the worse for their strenuous efforts. The work, which was under the direction of trainer Alex Gordon, was undertaken in the early morning hours, and the few work watchers on hand rubbed their eye in astonishment, but all agreed that the time was correct. It was the first time that trainer Gordon had called upon the two colts for speed and they responded in a manner that must have been gratifying to that clever trainer. They were both running handily for the entire distance, and could have gone the route in 1 :13. There was little to choose between the performances of the colts. They began together at the three-quarters post and. running as a team, covered the ground at a steady pace, finishing at the stand almost on equal terms. Their fractions were :23, :47% and 1:13%. Trainer Gordons beaming countenance after the trial spoke more eloquently than words of his satisfaction over the impressive showing made by the colts. "They are both fit and ready to race," was his terse and laconic comment as the colts were being led back to their stalls. COI.TS RFADY. Some misgiving among other horsemen over trainer Gordons action in sending these two Derby eligibles along at such a fast clip this early in the training period, was set at rest when the trainer explained that he was preparing both colts for their early spring engagements at Jamaica. They are both eligible to the Iaumonok and Woods Stakes, to be run at that track. Subsequently they will be sent to Pimlico to start in the Preakness Stakes and, after that race, returned here to start in the Derby. This pair and other horses in the Fair Stable will be shipped to Jamaica Saturday. April 14. and they will be thoroughly fit when they reach their destination. Following the workouts of Oh Say and "War Flier. Reproduce, which is trainer Gordons own Derby ecandidate. was brought out and also asked to display some speed over the three-quarters route. The colt went the distance in 1 :15, slower time than that recorded by Oh Say and War Flier, but the trial was more impressive and, in the opinion of many, a real "stand out." because Reproduce went out alone and had not the advantage of a pacemaker, like his stablemates. to spur him on to his best efforts. The son of Friar Pock and Antoinette, with jockey S. Kiden up, went at a steady gait that impressed the work watchers. He ran the quarter in : 2 1 -.-, . the half in A9Vr,. and finished the three-quarters fresh and strong in 1 :1." . Other trials at Douglas Park included a half mile in :•" :!-.-,. by Two Dans, and a half mile in :" 7. by Dan Burnham, both owned by J. J. Coughlin. Wacker Drive, another of the Coughlin Derby elegibles. was not called upon for any work. This colt has a slight wind trouble, for which trainer Danny Miller is treating him. Should. the tHMtble not yield to treatment, it will be necessary to have an operation per-•formed on the colt. TRACK I FFP IN DlST. At Chun-hill Downs, where the track was still deep in dust. Irish Pal supplied the outstanding trial. Under the direetion of Louis T i uber, the colt supplemented his good trial of last Sunday by running seven-eighths in 1:30%. galloping out the mile in 1:47%. He went the quarter in :25, half in :50% and three-quarters in 1:17%. Longridge and Bar None were sent a mile in 1 :47. the pair going out together with Longridge in the lead all the way. He ■tunned the half in :51% and the three-quarters in 1 :1S ■ :,. W. V. Thraves. owner of both colts, is due to make his first visit to Churchill Downs next Saturday, when they will bet let down for pretentious trials. The Parkview Stables Keith, nccompunied by Rhinock and Royal Omar, went three-quarters in 1 :22. L. M. Newgass, who, in partnership with Jake I.nwn t« in. owns the Derby eligible Rurlk and other horses in the I.owcnstein Stable, arrived from his home in Chicago to i inspect his bOTf. For his benefit Rurik was brought out and galloped a half mile in :53. Rurik is well advanced in his training and is in the best of health. Mr. Newgass announced that he j had bought the contract on jockey R. Yelton. Continued on eigUtu. page. SPECTACULAR GALLOP Continued from first page. The stable will also command the services of jockeys O. Willis and L. McDermott. Former jockey Lambert Garner, employed in the stable of Johnnie Jones at Douglas Park, had. a narrow escape when he was kicked by one of the stables two-year-olds. At the time. Garner was standing in front of the filly and she struck him in the face with her head and, whirling around, struck him again with her heels. The boy sustained a fractured jaw bone and severe lacerations on the face. The fillys heels came within a few inches of striking the boys temple.
