KILMER COLT SCORES • Gift Hawk Defeats Derby Eligibles at Havre de Grace. • Dignus Outstays The Heathen By Narrow Margin in Second — Edisto Best in Fifth. * HAVRE DE GRACE. Mil.. April 20.— If there was a feature at Havre de Grace today it was the second division of the Hare Wood Purse, which was run as the fourth race. This was a dash of three-quarters for three-year-olds, and five of the eight starters were Kentucky Derby eligibles. Xegopoli. Tuskegee. Bobashela, Nursery Rhymes and Folamile. Incidentally, all were making their first start of the year and this in itself attracted much interest to the running of the race. Several of them had worked well. "Willis Sharpe Kilmer furnished the winner in Gift Hawk, a good-looking colt by Rich Gift — Hawkshead. Gift Hawk had shown a good flight of speed in his previous effort and had the call going to the post a slight favorite over Folamile. Tuskegee, quickest to begin, showed in front when the start came, with Gift Hawk in closest pursuit. Oraigmyle had the latter under restraint and raced with the leader until making the turn into the home stretch, where Gift Hawk went into a commanding lead. At the end he was under restraint and had a margin of three lengths over Bobashela. Then came Tuskegee, beaten a head for second place. Tuskegee set a fast pace, going to the half in :47. The winner finished the three-quarters in 1 :123i. which marked the fastest three-quarters run at the meeting. Tuskegee may have bit a bit short. "When he tired. "Weiner did not punish him. and the race may help him. He is a handsome colt of good size and conformation, and his coat indicated perfect health. Bobashela raced next the rail all the way. He was climbing in the early stages. Folamile began very slowly, but finished in resolute fashion. XEI.LA K. WISC The Clinton Farms furnished the winner of the first race in Xella R.. a good looking miss by The Manager — Princess Royal. She was ridden by the apprentice H. Little, raced into the lead rounding the turn into the home stretch and drawing away in the Qaat eighth, had a three lengths margin over the Nevada Stock Farms Voyage at the finish. Golden Colna was third and Recognition fourth. The fifteen programed went to the post and several of the lot were quite fractious at the barrier. Starter Milton finally sent them away to a good start for all but Jake Jacoby. which got caught in a jam and was pulled up. There was some jostling and crowding during the running due to the big field and the race was not a truly run one. The Brookmeade Stable sent its first starter of the season to the post whec G. R. Tompkins saddled the good looking filly Stefally in the Hare Wood Purse, which was run as the third race. Stefally had been showing some good trials at Pimlico nad the Hill Top delegation came over and backed her to a man. Stefally was ridden by G. Fields, set her own pace and won by three lengths from . .. Smithsons M.dlie Elizabeth. Brown made several desperate efforts to get to the leader in the run down the back stretch, but Stefally had too much speed and at no stage of the journey did she appear .fully extended. An;;ry Mood was third and then followed the Idle Hour Farms Bruno. The Whitney colt. The Tartar, favorite for the race, could never get to the front and just as they reached the three-eighths post, he was caught in a jam and pulled up. This put him out of the struggle. LARGE CROWD. There was a large gathering out to see the sport. Racing conditions could not have been improved upon and k-en sport was in order. Tomorrows big attraetion is the 0,000 added Philadelphia Handieap. in which a field of fifteen of the best horses in training here is named to start, and a record crowd will likely turn out. Display and Scapa Flow are among those which are entered in this race. C. L. Whitings black filly Dignus was winner of the second race by the smallest of margins from II. C. Pierces The Heathen. It was a keen snuggle between the pair. The Heathen began slowly, and last but one of the field. Pascuma rushed him through next the inside rail, taking command just as they reached the half-mile post. Dignus was hanging to him like a leech and the pair came into the home stretch rather wide and .necks apart. The Heathen still had the lead, but the mare, closing with splendid courage, would not be denied. The diminutive Little Continued ou sixteenth page. I I • 1 s I of * * a j f , . Gracious Gift was third, beaten a length and a half for second place. The Seagram Stable scored its first victory the year when Edisto made a runaway affair of the Beverwyck Purse, a race of one and one-sixteenth miles. Edisto began fast, rushed into a good lead going to the first turn and Steinhart took hold of him, and for the remainder of the race Edisto was under restraint. At the finish he had margin of three lengths and a half over J. Fred A. The latter, the runner-up from the start, made several unsuccessful efforts to get to the front. He tired in the last sixteenth and was driving hard to beat the fast finishing Comet by a neck for second money. Aster started out like a winner in the sixth race. He took the lead in the run to the first turn and, straightened on the back stretch, drew away. Morocco, which began slowly, worked his way through next to the rail after passing the half-mile post and, rounding the far turn, carried Aster along at a rapid pace. In the run through the home stretch Aster tired and Morocco drew away into a six-length lead over Aster, which in turn beat Japonica four lengths for second place. Japonica showed a much better performance than the chart shows. She was on the outside for the entire race and lost fully half a dozen lengths at the head of the stretch, where she made a particularly wide turn. _ . . A
