MISSTEP PROBABLE CHOICE May Rule Favorite for American Derby to Be Run at Arlington Park. The American National Jockey Clubs American Derby, to be the star attraction of twenty-four days racing, opening June 4 and ending June «0, at Arlington Park, is looming up as one of the most outstanding outdoor events in the Middle West. The American Derby, at a mile and a quarter, closed this season with 148 nominations, the cost to each owner for entering his horse being 5. It costs 50 to start. The jockey-club adds 5,000. Second money is ,000, ,000 to third, ,000 to fourth, the fifth horse to save entrance and sa.ting fee. In the event the winner of the American Derby has previously won two races of 5,000 or one race of 0,000 this year, the owner will be presented with a bonus of ,000, the gift of the directing manager. William Dondas, racing secretary, in daily receipt of advice from owners of Derby eli-gibles, thinks thirty, possibly thirty-five, horses will start. After measuring the turns and width of the main stretch, he says thirty-five horses would have ample room. It is dawning on the students of racing that Misstep, which carried ths burden of pace-making in the Kentucky Derby, is a colt of high class. Misstep may be the choice in the American Derby. There will be argument in abundance to prove Leo J. Marks colt can win it, but there will be thousands to dispute it in behalf of the others. One that may be the recipient of considerable support will be Jack Hig-gins. He did that which re-established his caliber when he raced into fourth place in the Kentucky Derby.
