CANAAN WINS EASILY * • Le Mar Stock Farm Racer First in Dearborn Purse. ♦ 0 Gallops One Mile in 1:39 to Account for Feature Race at Washington Park. c o HOMEWOOD, 111.. May 29.— The Le Mar t Stock Farm stable was again in the limelight l! at Washington Park, taking down their sec- t ond purse of the meeting, when Canaan raced in ii his way to victory in the Dearborn Purse s over one mile, feature of todays program, f He reached the end of the route an easy | winner by a length and a half over Blesse- f field. The latter tried vainly to overtake the a winner in the late stages but was easily held safe. Devon, coming with his usual rush in t the stretch, passed tiring horses in the final r eighth to finish third. I Jockey E. Shropshire rode the winner, t Canaan was an outstanding favorite. He ran the one mile in the good time of 1 :39. I The start which was effected in the chute, r found Flood Control, Blessefield and Canaan I in the van on the back stretch, with the £ others following. Jack Hawksley being the 1 most prominent. Flattery ran dully, while I Devon and Quibbler were badly outrun, i Reaching the half mile post. Flood Control t quit suddenly and Shropshire sent the winner ] up and into a big lead. On the final turn i into the stretch Canaan drew away into a i three length advantage and, continuing out t of danger from Blessefield, won by a length "* and a half. t With a day of summer warmth, an ex- r. ceedingly large crowd was out for the sport, t which was featured by the consistent performances of the favorites. SECONDARY FEATURE. The Convey Purse, serving as the secondary feature event, saw the colors of E. K. ] Bryson carried to victory by the two-year- J old Jimmy Moran, ridden by L. Morris. He took into camp Tombereau, Pro Tern and three others which matched strides in the . five-eighths dash for juveniles. Tombereau j went out to set the pace and made it fast, retaining a long lead to the stretch. Jimmy Moran, from a slow beginning, rushed up into second place, where Morris took him under restraint, content to follow in the wake -of Tombereau to the final turn, gradually making inroad on the leaders margin. At the three-sixteenths post, he went into the lead ; and was too much for Tombereau when the latter tired. The winner was a strong ■ favorite. There was considerable confusion with the running of the opening race, an intended seven-eighths contest out of the chute ; it was found that the starting point for the race was a sixteenth more than seven-eighths away from the finishing mark. Consequently the initial race was run over the seven and a half furlongs route, as was the second race, a split of the first. Frances Rock was returned the winner of the opening race over Traymore, the favorite. Paula Shay and four others. Traymore, ridden by L. McDermott, set the pace in a game manner, closely pursued by the eventual winner. Traymore began to tire near the final eighth and it was then that the winner moved up along the outside of him with her winning rush and she wore down and got up to outgame Traymore. WINS SECOND PUP.SE R. Goose became a double winner at the meeting when his three-year-old colt Grenadier Guard, ridden by Heigle, sprinted to the finish well in advance of some good company in the third race, over three-quarters. Bar None raced to second place, staging a stiff struggle with Gossoon for that placing, finally beating the latter, which saved third place. Gossoon was the early leader with Bar None and Grenadier Guard racing right in his wake. After the first three-eighths, Grenadier Guard was sent past them with a rush and moved to the front. The winner never left the result much in doubt after that stage, drawing away. The winner was the favorite. There was another victory for the stable of C. W. Bidwill, when the well backed Hidden Thoughts, slight favorite over Howard Lee, chalked up one for Bidwill on the right side of the ledger. Hidden Thoughts was the leader throughout the seven and one-half furlongs in the second race, vanquishing House Boy, Whipcracker and four others. The afternoons first upset came with the running of the sixth race, also over one mile out of the chute. In this F. Maguire had Finnic home the winner, a shade in advance of the tiring Nora D.. with Woodgain third. The overthrow of Relline, the favorite, caused a disappointment for his many backers. Relline raced clot,e up to the leader and gave promise until near the last eighth, where he tired. Jockey L. Hardy had his first mount of the meeting in the fifth race today astride Blessefield. P. Reuter claimed John Johnson Jr. out of the seventh race Wednesday for ,500.
