DERBY FAVORITE ARRIVES • Naishapur Unloaded at Fairmount Park in Good Condition. ♦ Secretary J. B. Campbell Lists Ten Horses as Probable Starters in Saturdays Big Race. COLLINS VILLE, 111., May 29.— Chaffee Earls Naishapur, pronounced favorite for the Fairmount Derby, arrived in royal state from Louisville this morning and immediately became the center of interest to a critical gallery of turfmen here. The colt is the first of the stars that are expected to engage in the 0,000 feature next Saturday to reach the local track. Naishapur shipped in good style and was led from the train to his quarters without incident. He appears in fine fettle and no doubt justifies the high esteem in which he is held. With the certain absence from the race of Clyde Van Dusen, other owners are showing an inclination to "take a shot" at the rich prize and have stated their intention of starting their charges. The owners of Bather and Jack Haskell are among the latest to announce they will send their horses to the post Saturday. G. Collins may decide to start Thistle Fyrn. Minotaur is expected to reach here from Chicago some time tomorrow and alderman John J. Coughlin has advised that he will have Karl Eitel here Friday. The recent good trial of 2 :08 for a mile and a quarter over the Churchill Downs track by Karl Eitel, has sent his stock soaring and there will be many pulling for the success of the genial Chicago alderman. There has been nothing further heard from trainer Tom Healey regarding Africans starting in the race. He made known to secretary Campbell while at Toronto, that he intended shipping African here to start in the Derby. Secretary Campbell has ten horses listed as probable starters, but they include The Choctaw and African. The field is expected to be the following : Naishapur, Karl Eitel, Minotaur, Paraphrase, African, Bather, The Choctaw, Lieut. Russell, Jack Haskell and Thistle Fyrn. The latter will, if she starts, carry 113 pounds. Minotaur will have up 121 and Naishapur 126. The others will carry 118. Chaffee Earl, of Los Angeles, Calif., the owner of Naishapur, will witness the running of the Fairmount Derby Saturday. With Mr. Earl there will be Mrs. Earl and her mother, Mrs. Bunch, Mrs. Evans of Owens-boro, Ky. George Babcock of Louisville and A. M. Kinsler of Los Angeles. Mr. Earl and his party will arrive from Louisville Saturday morning. According to advices received by Bruce A. Campbell of East St. Louis, past grand exalted ruler of the B. P. O. E., the purple and white airplane of the National Elks Magazine and its occupants will be Derby visitors. The plane will arrive at Fairmount Park Saturday afternoon about 2 oclock and will alight in the center field of the race course. The plane is making a coast to coast flight from New York to Los Angeles to arrive at its destination in advance of the national grand lodge meeting of the Elks. The stop at Fairmount Park will be one of the few made in the flight. The plane is being piloted by Lieut. Edgar Schmid of Parks Field, East St Louis and Charles A. Hart, business manager of the Elks Magazine, is directing the flight. The purple and white plane will be met at Fairmount Park by delegations of Elks from St. Louis, East St. Louis, Granite City, Alton and Belleville lodges. *
