NEW STARTING MACHINE KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 8.— A new type starting gate will probably be put in use here Monday, when James McCarthy of San Diego expects to/Hiave his machine built at the five and one-lfalf furlongs pole. The new gate, which is of the overhead tower type, comprises twelve stalls, and is suspended on an overhead cable, which is held in place by weights attached to each side, with the weight on the inside having a pressure of 3. COO pounds to hold stalls in place when working. The stalls are let down and held in place on the track and when the barrier is released the stalls are raised by a pulley arrangement which swings stalls clear of the track and permits them to slide to the outside of the overhead cable. This gate has no springs and is operated the same way as the barriers. The horses are not locked and there is no danger of them being injured in any way. Mr. McCarthy has applied for a patent on his machine.
