BRILLIANT WORKOUT Uncle Matt Shows Fine Speed Over Sloppy Track. Gallops Three -Quarters in. 1:16. Over Kentucky Association Course Busy Pleases. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 2. Overnight rains converted the Kentucky Association track from a fast state into one that was sloppy, but this condition did not prevent Uncle Matt, the colt which T. J. Harmon is. training for P. J. Devereaux for the Kentucky Derby, from going six furlongs in 1:15, flat, to set a record for the season for IocAl Derby eligibles. Trainer Harmon had the three-year-old son of King Gorin Francis M. worked on the sand track, which presented somewhat, better footing than did the main course, and the time made by Uncle Matt was by far the most impressive of any horse which was sent through his paces this morning and one of the best moves turned in by any three-year-old at the Kentucky Association track this spring. The sand track is a short mile, and for that reason Uncle Matt, ridden by a 125-pound exercise boy, began at the three-eighths post and worked the wrong way of the track back to the eighth post. This is the usual procedure when one travels three-quarters of a mile over the sand track, as it has been a long established custom that horses work clockwise, instead of anti-clock wise, as is the case on the main track. . FAST FRACTIONAL TI31E. Uncle Matt was timed the first eighth in :12, the quarter in :24, three-eighths in :362s, half mile in :48, five-eighths in 1 :03, . flat, and the distance in 1:15. He was pulling up in the last eighth and was timed the seven furlongs in 1:31. Trainer Harmon said the boy worked Uncle Matt a little faster than he wanted the colt to work, but that he pulled up in good shape, and that the move was entirely satisfactory. Uncle Matt last year was a promising colt and looks like he is destined for great things this year. Lexington people are backing him in the winter books, and Mr. Devereaux says his colt will be a sure starter in the race, If everything breaks right between now and May 17. Uncle Matt was not the only Derby colt to impress his onlookers, however, as Busy also turned in a workout which trainer Art Gold-blatt said was the best of the year, in his opinion, for the son of Busy American Peach Blow. Busy was timed a mile in 1 :52ts, although he was pulling up in the last quarter. With 140 pounds in the saddle the Respess colt went the first quarter in :25Vs, three-eighths in half mile in :51, five-eighths in 1 :05 and the three-quarters in 1 :21. Busy worked by himself this morning and seemed to like the sticky going. He began at the three-quarters post and worked to the stand. Trainer Goldblatt was greatly pleased with Busy, saying that he has done everything asked of him and that his work this morning showed him to be a colt which can be depended on to travel a route and run with the best of them. TANNERY IN ACTION. Tannery, the colt which Auval Baker is training for the Derby for E. F. Prichard. was another three-year-old to go through his paces, the son of Ballot Blemished working three-quarters over the main track. Trainer Baker said he caught Tannery in 1:20, the quarter in :23, half mile in :51-"-f, and five-eighths in 1:05. The Prichard colt seemed to relish the sloppy track and the exercise boy said he had difficulty in holding him back. The colt pulled up full of play. Jockey K. Hoffman was astride C. W. Riedingers Alvin Ranshaw again today and the Derby eligible, one of the best looking horses which has trained over the Kentucky Association course in several years, sped over the three-quarters route in 1 :20 flat. Hoffman had a strong hold on the colt and yet he ran the quarter in :26, three-eighths in :39, half mile in :53 flat and five-eighths in 1 :0G. He did his work over the main track and did not seem to be extended at any stage of the route. Alvin Ranshaws workout took rank with the best of the morning, his long strides and seeming likeness for the going impressing the. few who saw him work. T. L. Pierce this morning reported that his mare Swastika had foaled a bay filly by -Flying Cloud and that the mare would be mated with W. J. Salmons Breeders Futurity winner Flight of Time, this spring. Col. R. L. Baker reported a chestnut colt bv I My Play Red Head at Tiatt Steeles farm in Fayette County.
