EXCELLENT DERBY WORKOUT Gallant Knight Goes One Mile and a Quarter at Downs. $ Breeders Futurity "Winner Timed in 2:1.1 for Distance Jack Sprnlt in Good Form. 4 LOUISVILLE. Ky., April 9. Gallant Knight, the Derby candidate of the Audley Farm Stable, turned in a brilliant workout at Churchill Downs this morning when trainer Spence sent the Breeders Futurity winner of 1929 one mile and a quarter in 2:13. Jockey Willie Kern was astride the colt and let him run the first quarter in :25. half in :50, five-eighths in 1:03; seven-eighths in 1:31, mile in 1:43 and one mile and an eighth in 1:57, being eased up the last eighth. Trainer Spence was at an angle at the three-quarters post and failed to get the time at that post. The brown colt cooled out nicely and his trainer was much impressed with his workout as it is the best recorded at this time in the West. Jack Spratt was the only other Derby candidate at the Downs to go farther than one mile in this mornings trials. The colt galloped one mile and an eighth in 2:01 for trainer Snearley. C. Griffin was again in the saddle and Jack Spratt had his Derby weight up. He was timed for the half in :52; three-quarters, about 1:18, mile in 1:47 and, as in the case of Gallant Knight, the three-quarters could not be timed accurately. Tack Spratt was under hard restraint all the way. " : Trainer Mose Lowenstein, of the I,e Mar Stock Farm Stable, sent Maudlin, the Derby eligible from that barn, with J. Flanagan in the saddle, a mile in 1:45. The half was run in :50, five-eighths in 1 :03 ; three-quarters in 1 :1G and seven-eighths in 1 :30. This colt improves steadily and, with the running of the big -race a matter of five weeks off, trainer Lowenstein expects him to be right on edge by the day of the big race. Play Ball, the John Marsch Derby colt, ran seven-eighths in 1:35, after going to the three-quarters post in 1:20. Trainer Cecil Howard is taking things easy with both him and his other Derby candidates, as they were off their feed for a few days recently. F. P. Letellier took over the Southland Stables Derby candidates. All Upset and Play Time, which Eddie Kaiser trained for him after they reached Louisville from New Orleans. He galloped the pair this morning but the time was slow. All Upset appeared the best of the two. The first half was run in :54, three-quarters in 1:23 and mile in 1:51. Arnold Hanger, who, with Silas Mason, .owns the Warm Stable, was a visitor at the Downs this morning. He came up from Gallatin, Tenn., where he attended a fox hunt meeting. He motored to Louisville in a well appointed car, equipped with sleeping berths and all appurtenances to make traveling a pleasure. Mr. Hanger will leave for Lexington this afternoon. J. Graham Brown, who has some horses at the Downs in charge of Tom Sanford and some friends, paid a visit to his barn. C. H. Trotter has signed up to train the horses of E. F. Simms of Paris. Ky.. who races under the nom de course of the Xalapa Farm Stable. He turned the horses of his own and other turfmen over to his brother, i H. R. Trotter, and will go to Lexington to assume clrarge immediately. Phil Riley, trainer of the E. J. Lehmann horses now quartered at the Downs, returned from a trip to Lexington, where his employer has some brood mares at the farm of Thomas S. Piatt.
