j S Highlights in Careers of Derby Eligibles Interesting Facts About Three-Year-Olds Soon to Be in Public Gaze. s S SWINFIELD I Juvenile Kccord By Swinburne Careful, owned by W. J. Starts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. "Won. Salmon J 18 2 2 i 5 $ 5,900 Swinfield is one of three nominated for the Derby by W. J. Salmon. He did much more racing as a two-year-old than either Battleship or Perfect Play, and figured, although not very prominently, in nearly all of the large stakes for juveniles. The son of Swinburne made his first start in June, at Aqueduct, and won from a big band of maidens, which included Squeaky and Spinach. His first stake engagement was in the Tremont, in which he finished fifth after being in close quarters. He Avas probably best in his third race, which was at Saratoga, though he was beaten a nose by Betty Beau. He was bumped while making his drive, quickly recovered and finished fastest of all. He was odds-on favorites in this." Swinfields next was the Hopeful Stakes, in which he carried 117 pounds. He was unable to keep up after showing early speed. In the Futurity Stakes, at Belmont, he carried 122 pounds and again was unplaced, running a fairly even race. He was made favorite again in the Piedmont Purse, for colts and geldings, at Havre de Grace and won, with plenty in reserve. The weight was 111 pounds. His race in the Eastern Shore Handicap was a good one. With 115 up, he finished third to Dedicate and Hi-Jack. He was a long shot in this, the show ticket paying 0.90. At Havre de Grace, on a muddy track, he was second to Ned O. in a mile race. He was ridden too confidently, perhaps, or might have won. Was under considerable restraint for three-quarters of a mile, then tired in the final drive. From that race he went into the Kentucky Jockey Stakes and was fourth to Desert Light. Alcibiades and Gallant Knight. It was not a bad race for him, but in the Pim-lico Futurity he was never in the running. Next he finished third to Ned O. and Cullo-den. Was hard ridden all the way and was beaten only a head for the place. In the Walden Handicap at Pimlico, Swinfield was third to Ned O. and Fortunate Youth. This was a very good race in which Swinfield was beaten only two heads after being forced wide when he was making a strong challenge. He finished with good courage. This performance caused him to be favorite in his last race of the year, but he was again forced wide and finished third to Fortunate Youth and Top Kick.
