CENTER OF INTEREST . Dedicate Cynosure of All Eyes at Lexington Course. I Everglades Stables Derby Eligi-. ble Given Easy Three -Quarters Gallop. LEXINGTON, Kj. April 9. Summerlike weather, -which spread over this section this morning, stimulated training activities at the local Kentucky Association track and the clay brought more ambitious work than was noted .since last Saturday. The gallop over a deep-cushioned, fast track, engaged a number of the Kentucky Derby and Oaks candidates and the work watchers were kept busy following the various three-year-olds in their moves. Perhaps the most prominent of the Derby hopefuls under saddle -was Dedicate, the Everglade Stables eligible, and, while trainer John Ward scheduled extremely light work for the son of Dodge, his every move was observed by the big gathering of visitors who lined the front" and back stretches. Dedicate visited the course only a short lime before noon and, with about 135 pounds up, -went three-quarters in 1:21. His rider started him at the three-quarters post and, after running the first quarter in :24, he finished three-eighths in :37, half in :52; and five-eighths in 1:06. He was never released from restraint and gave every in-idication of a desire to put more effort into his running. AVards method of preparing the brown colt is immensely popular with the horsemen here and, barring mishap, this highly regarded eligible for the Churchill Downs fixture will reach that important engagement in his best racing condition. It is not unlikely that he "will make his bow as a three-year-old during the local meeting and may find other of the best of his age in Kentucky ready to put him to test. TRAINER TAYLOR BUST. Walter Taylor, among the busiest of the trainers, included Ante Bellum, Dark Entry and Howtiz, three of H. P. Headleys four Derby candidates, among the many racers in that owners stable which he worked this morning. Each galloped three-eighths around :37 and are expected to figure in longer -workouts tomorrow. Dark Entry, an imported son of DOrsay and Blue Top, may be sent to Wheeling to start in the ?5,000 added Golden Jubilee Purse. Fine speed -was exhibited by Racketeer, the son of Sir Martin and Atala, -which Walter Grater is training for the estate of Eugene Byfield. Grater worked the Derby candidate .over three-eighths and he impressed by traversing the distance in :35. C. W. Riedingers Alvin Ranshaw, working -with his older half sister, Reenie, ran three-quarters handily in 1 :15. They ran the quarter in :23; half in :48 and five-eighths in 1 :01. Alvin Ranshaw, a son of "Last- Coin and Oreen, exhibited no little promise during his initial season of campaigning and filled out nicely during the winter. Trainer Art Goldblatt furthered the preparation of J. B. Respess Busy when he sent the son of Busy American one mile in com- pany with Bold Robin. Both ran fast during the early stages of their work and. while Busy completed a mile in 1 :45, Bold Robin required an additional four-fifths of a second to reach the end of the route. Busy ran the . first quarter in :23 ; three-eighths in :35 ; half in :4S, and three-quarters in 1:15, while .his stablemate, after keeping up for a quarter, finished three-eighths in :35 ; half in :48, and three-quarters in 1:16. HIEOVER WORKS OUT. J. It. Devereauxs Uncle Matt went three-quarters in 1:17, while R. S. Clarks Hieover and Rushing negotiated the same course in like fashion in 1:17. A. Baker, trainer of the Clark Stable, included in his next set AVhisp, which, with Hieover, is eligible for the Kentucky Derby, and he went three-quarters in 1:10. Galaday, Mr. Clarkes Oaks candidate, galloped a half mile in :54. This daughter of Sir Gallahad III. is coming to hand rapidly and looks and acts as good as the best of her Oaks rivals quartered here. Sewell Combs, who worked practically all of the more than a score of horses in his care, demonstrated Fiddler and Lady Fingers, Derby and Oaks nominees, which he owns in partnership with A. B. Gallaher, are close to racing condition when Fiddler sped over three-quarters in 1 :15 handily and Lady Fingers a like distance in 1 :15is, driving. Fiddler went the quarter in :23 ; three-eighths in :35 and half mile in :48 and, while his feminine barn mate succeeded in reaching the same post in like time, her speed diminished more appreciably while running the third quarter of a mile. He was well in hand at every stage of his work. The mile trial of Manta, Brownell Combs Oaks hopeful, was among the outstanding moves of the day. Under the guidance of Danny Connelly, she pulled up at the end of that distance in 1:43 and this after she had hurried over three-quarters in 1 :14. She ran the initial quarter in :23, half in :47, and five-eighths in 1 :00. R. M. Eastmans Mike Hall, in company with H. P. Headleys Pigeon Hole, sprinted five-eighths in 1:01. handily. They went along on even terms throughout and were timed in :23 for the quarter and in :48s for a half mile. Both horses will be ready for early engagements and it is understood that the program mapped out for Mike Hall will engage him more extensively than any season of his brilliant career. Monnie and Double O., being trained by Dan Morris, showed to advantage going three-quarters in 1:15 handily and the veteran Devon appeared at his best going a mile in 1 :43 and easing up an additional eighth in 1:5S. Carlos Ormsby, who campaigned a division of the Gallaher and Combs Stable at Hialeah Park, returned from Louisville and visited S. S. Combs at the local track this morning.
