, ; . , . ; . $ Announcement of E. B. McLeans Retirement Expected e BOWIE, Md.. April 12. It is expected that before many days there will come a positive announcement of the retirement of Edward B. McLean from racing. Mr. McLean announced that intention some -time ago and in late seasons he has taken so little actual interest in the turf, that it is not exactly surprising. Offers have already been made for Neddie, one of the most promising of the McLean-breds and at the same time one of the greatest disappointments when he was kept from the races by sickness. While no confirmation of the story of the sale was obtained from Mr. McLean, those in position to know said the plans were to dispose of both the racing and breeding stock, with the possible exception of Toro. The McLean silks have been prominent for many years, but of late the western sportsman has shown less interest in both racing and breeding. The unbeaten Colin was the premier stock horse at Mr. McLeans Virginia breeding farm and he has sent several good horses to the races. Another is Messenger, which raced brilliantly under the silks of August Belmont, while The Porter, still another, was a good horse and has proven a good sire. Neddie was recently retired to the stud and, altogether, it is a breeding establishment of considerable importance.
