SPECTACULAR FINISH Woodcraft Defeats Crack Brigade in Rennert Handicap Audley Farm Stables Derby and andPreakness Preakness Candidate Gets GetsUp Up in Final Strides BALTIMORE Md May 5 The Maryland Jockey Club offered for its patrons an attractive program this afternoon The Ren ¬ nert Handicap a 5000 stake for threeyear olds was in the nature of a public trial for Preakness Stakes eligibles and while it brought out the smallest field of the after ¬ noon it furnished a stirring contest in which the Audley Farms Woodcraft got up in the final strides to beat the well backed Crack Brigade by a nose Desert Light and Crack Brigade were sent over from New York to measure strides in this race Michigan Boy Colossal and Woodcraft made up the re ¬ mainder of the field In the early stages Crack Brigade racing in game fashion raced to the front and set a fast pace Colossal and Woodcraft fol ¬ lowed about a length back Desert Light appearing to sulk dropped out of conten ¬ tion and was far back Crack Brigade still had a lengths advantage until making the turn into the stretch where Woodcraft moved up with a rush and at the furlong post was within half a length of the leader A desperate drive between Crack Brigade and Woodcraft then ensued Robertson was putting up a skilled finish and he succeeded in getting his mount in front just as the Winning mark was reached It was a close finish between the pair one of the sort to leave the winner in doubt until the official placing was displayed Woodcraft is a Preakness and Derby eligible and will prob ¬ ably go to the post in one or both of these races races3rARYLA 3rARYLA DS OAVN PURSE PURSEThe The sport opened with the running of the Marylands Own Purse This was a race of four and a half furlongs for twoyearolds foaled in Maryland There were eight start ¬ ers Pretty Boy being withdrawn When the Start came Ruth Tidings left with a rush and in the early stages drew away to open up a lead of a couple of lengths over Gay Pal Spirit River and Royal Mystery fol ¬ lowed Workman was pn the inside with Spirit River and making the turn for home saved much ground Royal Mystery went wide at this stage and Walter 1C which began well but was taken up by Stevens was far back In the final furlong Ruth Tidings tired and Spirit River assumed an easy lead to win by a length and a half Gay Pal was second secondFair Fair Orb came from far back to win the second race This was a race over six furlongs under claiming conditions and Fair Orb was the best backed of the starters In the early stages Fair Orb was rating along with the rear division Quackenbush was sitting still and not until on the far turn did he make a move When called on Fair Orb responded with a good burst of speed and finishing fast wore Alwington Dolly down to get up in the last 100 yards and at the finish won going away by half a length Guilder was third beaten by two lengths for second place Wig which forced the pace until well into the stretch tired when put to a drive and dropped out of it itNoisy Noisy Miss scored a runaway victory in the third race when she led Leader home by two lengths Beginning rapidly Schae fer sent Noisy Miss into a long lead in the first furlong and on the far turn she had a commanding advantage Leader was second and Grey Nanny third Noisy Miss still continued on her way but at the end Schaefer took her under restraint and at the end she won with a margin of two lengths
