CAYUGA WINS EASILY Kentucky Hotel Handicap Feature at Churchill Downs Betty Derr Scores in Blossom BlossomTime Time Purse Third Victory Victoryin in Four Starts LOUISVILLE Ky May 12 Cayuga the fouryearold unsexed son of Trojan in the Shady Brook Farm Stable of Theodore E Mueller local patron offered convincing evi ¬ dence that he must be reckoned with in sprinting circles during the year when he easily defeated Camp Boss Morsel and nine others that included High Score champion sprinter of the winter in the Kentucky Hotel Handicap at Churchill Downs this afternoon The race contested over six furlongs fea ¬ tured an attractive program which had pre ¬ sentation before a large patronage and under fine weather and track conditions conditionsThe The nimble footed victor crushed his oppo ¬ sition with a phenomenal burst of early speed and raced home unchallenged three lengths in advance of Camp Boss the latter half as far in the van of Morsel which gained third by a nose over Silverdale SilverdaleHigh High Score of which much was expected had his work cut out keeping within closest pursuit of the swift winner for threeeighths then gave way badly and was eased up when definitely eliminated in the stretch As Carl Meyer was driving High Score in his vain endeavor to get to the fast running Shady Brook gelding the latter was clicking off a pace which permitted him to complete the opening quarter in 22 and half mile in 4G5 4G5Following Following such a pace left High Score with nothing after the half way mark was reached and the more courageous Campboss and Morsel a pair of threeyearolds read ¬ ily disposed of the A P Canale colt ap ¬ proaching the stretch stretchThrough Through the final quarter Campboss held Morsel safe with the latter just lasting to earn third from Silverdale which came through in good style and only failed in overhauling Morsel through being forced to find his course a good distance out in the track almost for the entire way wayCayuga Cayuga making his first start of the year ran the distance in 112 which marked the fastest performance over the course this spring He was ably ridden by L Pichon PichonBetty Betty Derr H P Mary Cobb winner of the Hinata Stakes at the recent Lexington meeting raced to third place with six others all from among the well regarded fillies following followingBetty Betty Derr after taking the lead with a rush in the first sixteenth drew clear on the turn but Purple Lady moved up to her quickly after entering the final quarter and as they fought it out stubbornly the winner aided her cause by bearing out and forcing Purple Lady out with her herJ J B Partridge saddled another winner for the Valley Lake Stable this time from among the establishments juveniles when Upright a chestnut son of Baby Grand Roxana accounted for the New Hope Purse the opening race This brought out nine maiden colts and geldings and the winner making his first appearance won by a length from Mark Anthony at the end of four and onehalf furlongs The Widower sprinted to the finish in advance of the others of which Peace Jimmy through a flasli of early speed was alone in furnishing note ¬ worthy contention contentionA A close finish and big surprise marked the second race which attracted a big field from among the better grade older sprinters Sporting Lady a rank outsider ridden by the inexperienced apprentice R Reeves nosed I out Zoom the favorite the latter leading Supreme Sweet by a trifle more than a length while Bob Kernan headed the others Zoom after following close to the leading C M Mc Kenna through the back stretch dropped back several lengths after reaching the turn but gamely worked his way to the front in the stretch only to lose in the final strides The winner a factor from the start but racing wide throughout steadily improved her position after reaching the last quarter and finished in game fashion to win The tiring Supreme Sweet saved third place by a head headThe The colors of H P Whitney were carried to their first triumph of the current Kentucky season when Gotoit ridden by K Russell and saddled by M Goldblatt proved the easiest kind of a winner over Royal Yeoman Farm Hand and nine others of the cheaper grade threeyearolds in the third race This was run over one mile and a sixteenth and the winner led from the first threesixteenths and came away in the stretch to win by six lengths Upsedaisy which ruled as sec ¬ ond choice to the winner experienced ill luck in that after being forced very wide on the first turn she was unable to save any ground during the subsequent racing and failed to offer a serious challenge at any stage of the race
