VETERAN GELDING SCORES Lounger Defeats Orestes n in Forest Park Purse Salutation Surprises In Fourth Race Birth ¬ day Gift Wins In Maiden Juvenile Race COLLINSVILLE 111 May 12 Splendid weather prevailed for the second days rac ¬ ing at the Fairmount Jockey Club course The track was fast and a big crowd turned out to witness the sevenrace program headed by the Forest Park Purse run as the fifth race This brought to the post some of the good sprinters stabled at the course and resulted in an exciting contest contestThe The first purse of the day went to J Umensetters Nelson while the firsttime starter Birthday Gift scored in the maiden juvenile race called the Eads Purse and run as the second race raceLounger Lounger the nineyearold gelding by Sweep Sweet Marjorie which races for S Louis made an auspicious 1930 debut by winning the Forest Park Purse with Orestes II second while Gideon was third thirdNelson Nelson Mrs K Ramseys consistent three yearold was returned the winner of the threequarters first race when he gained hon ¬ ors over Fig Leaf Thistle Marty and nine others of the plater division The winner came in for strong support being Installed the favorite at post time and his victory was well earned for Fig Leaf made him ex ¬ tend himself to the limit to earn the verdict The start was delayed eight and onehalf minutes due to the fractiousness of Thistle Marty Fern Clarence and Goose Step StepNELSON NELSON THROUGHOUT THROUGHOUTNelson Nelson under the alert guidance of jockey J Judy lost no time getting to the front and although he held a commanding lead as they entered the final quarter he showed signs of tiring and was giving way rapidly to the challenge of Fig Leaf which finished fast in the stretch Outside of a brief burst of speed by Mae Price the race was practically domi ¬ nated by the first three horses horsesBirthday Birthday Gift a goodlooking juvenile from the stable of Walter I Kohn earned brackets in his initial start when he outgamed F Serembas Atlas and Princess Peroxide in a thrilling finish in the second race for maiden juveniles Atlas was the first to show when the start came after a long delay due to the bad post manners of several of the starters Molly Hogan followed in close attendance with Princess Peroxide a slight margin before Birthday Gift They held this order until the final eighth was reached where jockey W Kern brought the winner up on the out ¬ side and under hard riding she continued gamely and with speed that earned the purse by half a length Atlas held on long enough to get second place by a head in advance of Princess Peroxide which finished with rare gameness gamenessApprentice Apprentice jockey E Goodrich rode his first winner of the meeting when he piloted II W Millers Toltec to an easy victory in the third race over J H Edwards The Moon which finished second while Water Fowl was third Miss Pat was the favorite one in this but was decisively beaten after racing her way into third place during the running She gave way without any resist ance when the final drive came finishing seventh in the field of nine that went to the post for the contest contestCLEANCUT CLEANCUT VICTORY VICTORYThe The winner which has shown a return to the form that made him a local favorite had a cleancut victory for he led through ¬ out the threequarters The Moon which raced to second place held that position from the start and had no difficulty in leading Water Fowl The latter began rather slowlit but as the race progressed worked his way up and gaining much ground finished four lengths in the van of Bright Flag for third money moneyThe The fourth brought together seven platers over the one mile and an eighth course and Salutation and jockey A Pendergrass proved a winning combination when the aged gelding outran the others for the entire distance Ethel Galliger got second place with Melita third Rufe McClain proved a disappointment as he was the public favor ¬ ite but failed to display enough ability to keep pace with the first three at any stage and could not improve his position under hard riding The winner furnished a mild surprise as Melita came in for much backing and also failed in his endeavor to conquer the representative of H Mack and was four lengths behind Ethel Galliger
