Under a good ride by Jason Eaby Friar a Florida devel ¬ opment of George D Wideners captured the Greenfield Claiming Stakes a fiveeighths dash for twoyearolds that served as the main attraction at Jamaica today todayThe The bay gelding by St James La Re ligieuse led all the way in one of the closest hardfought races of the local meeting Friar led home J P Jones Hieaway by a half length and a similar distance separated the latter from Mrs T R Queens Grandma Lapp Traitor was fourth two lengths far ¬ ther back backFrom From within a few yards after the start which was a good one the first four horses were well bunched throughout the race none 6 the others being dangerously close after the halfmile ground was passed Friar was the first to get in full stride and hav ¬ ing an inside position soon had the rail position On the outside of him were Trai ¬ tor Hieaway and Grandma Lapp Lapp3IA11GIN 3IA11GIN OF VICTORY VICTORYThe The ground that Friar saved may have been his margin of victory as the others were on the outside throughout On the turn Friar moved out until he was about a length in advance of the others but coming into the stretch there was a general clos ¬ ing up The Widener gelding came a trifle wide but the move hampered his oppo ¬ nents the most especially Grandma Lapp LappTraitor Traitor began tiring at the furlong post but in the remaining distance the riders of the first three horses used their whip inces ¬ santly Friar continued gamely to the end while Hieaway managed to shake off Grandma Lapp sufficiently to take second honors honorsIt It was the first triumph for the G D Wide ner silks and trainer A J Joyncr in New York this year also their first starter starterEaby Eaby was very much in the limelight also piloting Rumor and Dim Ray into the win ¬ ners circle circleThe The feature was worth 4100 to the winner and was run in 101 101Apprentice Apprentice Eaby signalized his first New York appearance when he guided H E Mc ¬ Caffreys Rumor to an easy victory in the first race of the day a dash of threequar ¬ ters for platers Bourbon Maid was the one to race to second place while My Brentwood Girl was third thirdBourbon Bourbon Maid and Rumor cut out the early running but the favorite bore out slightly entering the stretch and then Rumor drew away into command increasing his margin of victory with every stride Bourbon Maid was tiring at the end but stood a drive to outlast My Brentwood Girl The latter which raced forwardly throughout had no mishaps in the running runningLACE LACE IIS STIRRING FINISH FINISHFillies Fillies and mares threeyearolds and over started in the Chatham Handicap a race over six furlongs and a stirring finish re ¬ sulted with Lace from the Mendham Stable leading W R Coes Sweep Out home after a drive G W Carrolls Okaybee was third Six started and the winner was the popular choice choiceThere There was some delay at the post due to the fractious behavior of Mad Kiss When the start came it was a good one and Sweep Out Okaybee and Mad Kiss were the quick ¬ est to draw away Lace was leading Duste inall while Crossco was in the rear The three leaders were closely bunched on the far turn but Sweep Out soon shook off Okaybee while Mad Kiss was put under pressure McAtce brought Lace up on the outside and when straightened out in the stretch moved up to the flying leader Sweep Out was hanging on gamely but Lace de ¬ spite carrying top weight was gaining stead ¬ ily In the final few yards the Mendham Stables starter caught the leader and at the end had a neck advantage Sweep Out had a much bigger margin over Okaybee which in turn had a length over Mad Kiss which barely lasted to defeat her stable companion Crossco gained some ground in the stretch and was worked out one mile milePlaters Platers of the cheaper order started in the fourth race and Eaby put up a spirited finish to have Dim Ray from the California Stable a winner by a narrow margin over the Wheatley Stables Jodhpur Fred Whit ham was a distant third A fall at the start which did not have any serious re ¬ sults eliminated Begin Over The latter raced along with the others and at differ ¬ ent stages caused some interference when he weavcd in and out Dim Ray was close up all the way assumed the lead on the far turn where Jodhpur moved up on the outside The two drew away from the oppo ¬ sition in the stretch and in the final drive Jodhpur tired badly after it appeared that he would race past the leader Dim Ray had a head advantage Fred Whitham which finished third was many lengths back backH H P Whitney furnished the winner of the fifth race of the day in Chene a daugh ¬ ter of Dis Done Acron In a drive she showed the way to G A Cochrans Helian thus while James Butlers firsttime starter Avaricious was third The winner was rid ¬ den by Workman forced the pace through out and outlasted the Cochran representa ¬ tive The latter showed good early speed and saved ground throughout He raced greenly when put under pressure in the final furlong Avaricious after being bumped about in the early stages finished with a rush to be a good third before the tiring Cynic
