UPSET AT LOUISVILLE Silverdale Surprises by Winning Seelbach Hotel Purse Royal Julian Fails Backers and andFinishes Finishes Third Spanish Play PlayIs Is Best in Fourth Race LOUISVILLE Ivy May 21 Clear summer weather and improved tracks conditions pre ¬ vailed as the Churchill Downs meeting passed the halfway point this afternoon and the good program offered was presented before an unusually large midweek crowd availing themselves of the first favorable weather since last Friday The Seelbach Hotel Purse for older racers which was the feature re ¬ sulted in one of a number of surprises when Silverdale the representative of B B Mc ¬ Lean raced home the winner Lady Broad ¬ cast accounted for second place and Royal Julian the pronounced favorite followed in advance of six others othersThe The failure of Royal Julian marked the undoing of four of the first five favorites while Silverdale joined the double winners for the meeting in accounting for the purse purseUnder Under a gqod ride by the veteran Eddie Ambrose Silverdale maintained a position in closest pursuit of Agincourt the leader for more than threequarters and responding in his best style when called upon in the stretch was not long at gaining the lead This accomplished he continued resolutely and stalled off the fastclosing Lady Broad ¬ cast to win by a length The latter brought from a good distance back with a rush through the closing quarter finished going strong and led Royal Julian by two lengths at the close closeFAVORITE FAVORITE SWERVES SWERVESA A tendency to bear in when punished in the drive hurt the favorites chance but his effort failed to compare with his smashing previous one and occasioned much disappoint ¬ ment for the large crowd After holding sway by a wide margin to the stretch Agincourt tired swiftly and Buddy Basil also outstayed her to finish in fourth place placeSpanish Spanish Play recently acquired by C H Knebelkamp and R S Morris made an auspi ¬ cious debut under their colors when he over ¬ came poor racing luck and proved an easy winner over Tack and Shining from the Greentree Stable and eight others several highly regarded in the fiveeighths Cherokee Road Purse or fourth race raceThe The victor a likely son of Spanish Prince II and Anna Horton was right at home in the slow footing and after keeping up without ample room during the opening threeeighths readily disposed of Tack when clear in the stretch then drew out to an easy victory Tack although excelled by the victor held on resolutely with the result that he out ¬ stayed Shining his stablemate and Cousin Jo by a length for the place The latter and Shining finished on almost even terms a scant nose earning third for the Greentree representative Gun Fire and Liberty Ace were disappointments the former tiring after showing the way to the stretch and the lat ¬ ter failing to make an appreciable recovery after being forced back in the run to the turn turnCONSISTENT CONSISTENT WINNER WINNEREstin Estin for several years a consistent win ¬ ner for Harned Brothers local owners added defeated Photos Star Bar Sinister and twelve others in the first race This was decided over six and onehalf furlongs and the winner after wresting the lead from Photos Star drew away to a decisive vic ¬ tory During the final drive Bar Sinistered threatened Photos Star yet the latter while tiring succeeded in outstaying her for sec ¬ ond place placeAn An unlucky defeat for E B McLeans Water Port marked the second race for maiden juvenile fillies The youngster prob ¬ ably much the best among the fourteen start ¬ ers lost through the ill luck of being crowded back on the turn then finishing with fine speed failed by the shortest of margins Nadia took first with honors by a head from Thunder Nymph which just managed to nose out the unlucky McLean youngster During the run through the stretch Water Port ganied many lengths and maintaining high speed to the end was rapidly getting to the leaders when the finish was reached The unplaced included wellbacked ones in Spring Cleaning which suffered no mishaps and showed an even performance to finish in fourth place and Beauty Belle which had little chance under a poor ride rideWith With C Legnon putting up a poor ride astride Rolling Sea and Old Cally delaying his move just a trifle too long Monticello the starter of the Greentree Stable took first place in the third race Under the riding of Legnon who following the race was called before the stewards Rolling Sea had only a limited chance and Old Callys failure to get going sooner cost him honors by a nose Royal Sport which set much of the pace was third four lengths back and a head in the van o Rollins Sea
