EASY FOR BROWN WIZARD Hollis Claiming Stakes Only Romp for Sanford Sprinter Racing Conditions at Bclmont Park Nearly Perfect Rooney Triumphs In Steeplechase Race NEW YORK N Y May 21 E F San fords Brown Wizard did not have to be much of a horse to be winner of the fea ¬ ture offering at Belmont Park today This feature was the Hollis Claiming Stakes that was worth 3700 to the winner The son of Brown Prince II was so much the best that he simply romped home the winner by four lengths over Frank E Browns Mor dine and the son of Morvich was five lengths before Frank Brays Stand By with Ro ¬ many Baw a close fourth fourthConditions Conditions were nearly perfect for the rac ¬ ing though it was a day when the top coat was not altogether out of place The track had improved greatly and while the wind was a bit strong which was a bar to fast time it was not strong enough to make much difference differenceThere There was an added attraction to the reg ¬ ular program at which Whichone was brought out for a training gallop of one mile between races This is told of elsewhere but it was an attraction of the afternoon and the hand ¬ some son of Chicle came in for much praise when shown in the paddock paddockIn In the Hollis Stakes Fator got Brown Wizard away fast and he dominated the race First Stand By and then Mordine attempted to keep pace with him but when Fator elected he shook them both off easily to come away to his easy victory There did not seem to be any reasonable excuse for any of the others and Brown Wizard moved up a bit as a sprinter among the platers platersPROMISING PROMISING FILLY FILLYScott Scott Harlan saddle a good filly for Mrs W M Jeffords when he sent out Noyena in the first race for fillies After having a particularly rough race she was winner over Marvella from the Newtondale Stable with Mrs Henry Rogers Winthrops Hand ¬ over beating Marshall Fields Chosa for third It was the first start for the daugh ¬ ter of Golden Broom and Beatitude and she was only meeting those of the plater division but the running put a severe test on both her speed and her courage and she came through magnificently magnificentlyThe The start was a good one but almost at once Novena was knocked back badly and she ran from one bit of trouble into an ¬ other Finally in the last furlong Work ¬ man found an opening and weaving his way through in a powerful finish he had her past the line winner by a length and a half halfRooney Rooney racing for the Brookmeade Stable was winner of the Westbury Steeplechase over the short course when he led home Joseph E Wideners Indigo which was rid ¬ den by Dolly Byers who was making his first appearance of the year John J Nes bitts Rubigny ridden by G H Pete Bost wick was a distant third There were six Which raced and the only one that dfd not complete the course was F Ambrose Clarks Knockalong Tom which went down at the ninth fence when racing in second place to the winner From a good start Rooney was more alert than the others but Indigo went after him with such a rush that Byers at once took hold of the son of Stefan the Great to place him Smoot also took hold of Rooney and swinging into the front field lost considerable ground by going wide It was there that Mr Jingo showed in front and Knockalong Tom was right at hand Indigo was fighting for his head and going to the water Smoot had crossed back of the leaders to take a place on the inside insideKNOCKALONG KNOCKALONG TOM FALLS FALLSIt It was not until the upper end of the field was reached that Smoot made any effort to catch Knockalong Tom That was not much of a trick and from that time the result was never in doubt Knockalong Tom went down trying to match the move of the winner In the meantime Dolly Byers was making his move with Indigo The Widener maiden moved up with a great rush but Smoot realized the danger and he kept Rooney at his task to have him safely winner by four lengths Twentyfive lengths back of Indigo Rubigny was an easy third and the others trailed along badly strung out outFive Five of the nine maiden juveniles brought out for the four and a half furlongs race over the Widener course run as the fifth race were making their first appearance under silks For that reason little was known of the relative merits of the young ¬ sters The finish was an exceedingly close one and the decision went to Sergt Don ¬ aldson from the Glen Riddle Farm Stable and one that had the advantage of some education in races W R Coes Masked Ball another that had raced was second and Gifford A Cochrans Repentance was third Probably when Repentance learns something about racing he will reverse the order of this finish finishRepentance Repentance and Seb were the ones to force most of the pace and finally Repentance had Seb beaten but as he did he swerved out rather badly and then it was that Masked Ball and Sergt Donaldson came into con ¬ tention The winner raced straight along the rail while the other two did some swerv ¬ ing that probably accounted for the result
