PLAYTIME TRIUMPHS Surprises in New Albany Handicap at Churchill Downs Purple Lady Disappoints in Indian IndianHills Hills Purse Martha Jones I Wins Second Straight LOUISVILLE Ky May 22 Playtime threeyearold in the Southland Stable of Charles Bacharach New Orleans owner which for a time entered into Kentucky Derby calculations scored his initial victory of the year and second of his career when he accounted for the New Albany Purse best race on this afternoons program at Churchill Downs Port Harlem under the colors of M Finn and coupled with E B McLeans Nymph King raced to second place only a neck back and little more than a length in the van of the Braedalbane Stables Fair Rosalind RosalindOnly Only four others followed the placed trio but they included an outstanding offender in Harry Payne Whitneys Bezonian On the strength of fast private trials this unsexed son of Pennant came in for unusually con ¬ fident backing only to fail badly It was the first start of his career and this combined with his rankness while on the way and at the post probably contributed to his failure failureKenneth Kenneth Russell had the Whitney repre ¬ sentative away in good order but he could not keep pace with the winner Port Har ¬ lem and Fair Rosalind and was soon a half dozen lengths back on the turn where Play ¬ time under a clever ride by Willie Gar ¬ ner pulled away from Port Harlem Rus ¬ sell failed to prevent his fancied mount from losing considerable ground and when straight ¬ ened up in the stretch he in nowise came through with a measure of his reputed ability abilityIIAXGS IIAXGS OX GAMELY GAMELYThrough Through the closing stages Port Harlem closed ground on the winner yet the lat ¬ ter kept going in fair order with the re ¬ sult that the Finn filly was held safe As she gradually bettered her position Fair Rosalind also kept pace with the result that the more successful trio pulled far away from the others of which Easter Morn raced from last to finish fourth fourthIt It was another ideal day for the sport and another slightly larger than average crowd took in the racing over a fast track trackWith With Purple Lady under the guidance of R Finnerty failing to display the form of her previous two efforts Looney Jones Martha Jones experienced no great difficulty racing to victory in the Indian Hills Purse This was the fourth race and secondary fea ¬ ture and as Martha Jones showed the way by a length at the end of the fiveeighths Miss Electra and Miss Chilla finished a nose apart with Miss Electra second Purple Lady failing to furnish contention at any stage followed three lengths back of Mary Cobb which finished in fourth place and Nisia completed the field fieldThe The winner well ridden by Paul Neal was quick to draw away into a clear lead and maintaining good speed for the entire race her position was never threatened yet Neal hustled her along in the final stages It was her second victory in consecutive starts and furnished another mild upset as Purple Lady came in for such support that she had the distinction of being one of the outstand ¬ ing favorites of the afternoon afternoonCLEORA CLEORA IX FROXT FROXTCleora Cleora one of the mainstays of the Harned Brothers stable carried the colors of that establishment to victory in the open ¬ ing race This was at threequarters for plater fillies and mares and the winner ridden by apprentice Lennie got away with honors by a length over Broomshot A like margin back Lady Fingers the unlucky favorite saved the minor part of the purse The winner making her first start since the St Johns Park meeting proved the second first race victor in two days from her stable and her success furnished a mild upset upsetBroomshot Broomshot in working her way to the lead swerved under apprentice Ellsworth and in the resultant crowding Lady Fingers while following in the wake of Broomshot Cleora and Jessie Carey was the chief sufferer Entering the stretch where the winner raced around Broomshot Lady Fingers loomed en ¬ couragingly for her big following but the effort told during the subsequent racing and she gave way through the closing sixteenth sixteenthE E J OConnell saddled another winner for Knebelkamp Morris when Harry Kuhns the juvenile son of Dunboyne and Jou Jou clicked off his fourth winning effort in con ¬ secutive starts in defeating Oswego Twill and six others in the fiveeighths Silver Lake Farm Claiming Purse or second race The gelding ridden by C Landolt dominated without full effort the entire final half mile and won easily During the opening and Twill which fought it out to a head finish in which Oswego had the advantage advantageA A big band of older maidens brought to ¬ gether under claiming conditions furnished the third race over one mile ami a sixteenth and Gardner Van Dusen furnished the winner in the wellbacked Prince Tokalon He gained his initial success after the hard ¬ est kind of a race and at the end had but a head over Spanflow Pandean was third while Loretta B of which much was ex ¬ pected came through disappointingly and was always far back backThe The winner after working his way into the lead lost it to Spanflow but after holding sway for a quarter the latter tired and the victor wore him down in the final strides
